Target has recently unveiled a new line of party products called Wit & Delight, which places craft beer front and center: http://www.target.com/c/wit-delight...wit_delight&orginalSearchTerm=wit+and+delight)

Overall, I think it's fun and well-done. Except for one thing:

The growlers come in green glass. I'm certain that hardened craft beer geeks probably aren't the core audience for this collection. But it really would have been nice had someone raised the issue before it went into production. I think it would have made this effort more worthwhile. (There's also the matter of the Surgeon General's warning, which is required for growler fills in the State of Georgia. But I digress.)

That point aside, check it out if you're interested in this sort of thing. Kitschy. But fun. It also raises the issue of "craft beer parties." I went to one this past weekend, and it was genuinely fun. While it's true that many BA's operate at a different level from the general public, it's nice to see such interest. It certainly wasn't there 15 years ago. Now excuse my while I reach for one of my microbrews...

I think it's probably required everywhere. I've also heard that some breweries will refuse to fill a growler that isn't amber. Not the greatest product...

It's not required on the Federal level - it is a state by state decision, as noted on the TTB website's Beer FAQ (B9):

What no Lambic baskets? They would make a killing off those if you could order online

Nothing says beer tasting more than a faceted geometric candle holder.

But how many states don't require it? My impression is few if any.

But you initially stated "probably required everywhere" and I noted that it's not a Federal rule and the Feds themselves use the term "some states" - both of which imply to me that it is not close to universal.

Only states I've ever bought growlers in are NY and NJ - no warning label necessary. These two articles imply that even some PA growlers are not subject to the Warning Label requirement, based on the license of the filler (brewery, brewpub, retailer)- A Primer and Growler/PLCB. Of course, as with all alcohol laws in PA, "it's complicated".

Previous threads about growler laws have led me to believe that quite a few states follow the TTB definition of a "growler as a glass", and they are not subject to labeling laws. And, of course, where a label is required, there is no reason a paper label can't be applied.

The Brewers Association has a Growler Law page
with a pull-down menu for each state, but I'm sure not going to sort through all that legalese :grinning:.

MA and CT don't require it, only two states where I've bought one. 100% of my growler fill states do not require it.

It's my understanding that in NJ it's now required. (A law that's followed a little loosely, though). I was told this by 2 different newer, small-scale brewers. I think it was part of the laws that changed things last year. It could also only be a Guild thing that has its roots in the CYA attitude that is prevalent in the industry.

That may be for brewery/brewpub-filled growlers (it is typically required for so-called "pre-filled" growlers), but NJ also allows bars and restaurants, as well as liquor stores with "Broad C" licenses (aka “32" - Plenary Retail Consumption License with the “Broad Package Privilege,”) to fill growlers, and they almost universally fill any growler, with or without a warning or any other labeling.
