Temperance Beer Co. in Evanston, Illinois announced on Instagram that their last day of service will be October 27.

Just over eleven years ago, on September 18, 2013, I sent out our first ever email newsletter. Its focus was the launch of Temperance Beer Co. into the world by way of Prairie Moon that very night. Since it was a Wednesday and the forecast called for rain (and Temperance was hardly known), the turnout was expected to be low.

The rain did come, so staff were cut early at Prairie Moon. But that didn’t stop a capacity crowd from showing up and drinking all the beer — quickly! (Our friends at Louis Glunz Beers ran back to the warehouse that night to grab more kegs, and Prairie Moon had to call in more staff.) It was an incredible launch.

Unfortunately, the world of craft beer today is barely recognizable compared to craft beer circa 2013. It’s difficult to even imagine that kind of excitement for a new brewery launch these days.

We’ve weathered a lot over the years, but in the end the long tail of Covid and its lasting changes it wrought with the spending, eating, and drinking habits of Americans has claimed another small, family-owned business.

Our last day of service will be October 27, 2024.

Though Temperance will be leaving its home, we are hopeful the brand will live on in a different form after we close. At this time, however, there are no details to share or promises to make.

In the meantime, please come see us, enjoy and stock up on our approachable and award-winning beer, spend some social time with friends new and old, tell us your stories and favorite memories of Temperance, and take home some merch to remember us by (now collector’s items!).*

Thank you for your support over the years. Please continue to support our local retail, restaurant, and bar partners who will be pouring our beers (hopefully) for a good long time after we are no longer able to host you in our Tap Room.

    Gratefully,
    Josh Gilbert
    Founder

    * In true Temperance style (we had branded shirts before we had a home), a shipment of dope corduroy rope hats with a throwback logo (ordered in early spring) will be arriving sometime soon. Keep an eye out!

I blame parents for this. If we don't start our kids drinking younger, who is going to sustain these breweries as we age out?

These kinds of farewell statements have become somewhat rote but I still find this an insightful passage.

I'm with you on this. My 16-year-old son comes home sober every Friday and Saturday night and I ask myself: where have I gone wrong?
