Myth! I have bought cold beer from the store, then stored it in a warm environment and its all good. Its extreme temperatures you need to worry about. This is an old high school fable regarding crappy beer like Beast Ice.

Priming casks is routine practice but it's unlikely that priming would last for the length of the journey and I can't see crewmen repriming every week or two.
The temperature in the hold of a wooden vessel in tropical waters was very high indeed.

Rob, do you have any references (links) that you can provide here?

This assertion contradicts what Mitch Steele wrote on page 92 of his book:

“Most resources indicate that the beer was not primed prior to shipping, which makes sense, given that the casks were not located close enough to the breweries for any sort of priming operation.”

    Cheers!

No, I'm pretty sure they force carbed all their beer with 1800's era stainless steel CO2 tanks.

There was twice as much Porter as IPA shipped to India , it was drunk by the troops while the administrators drank the IPA. The latter were the ones who wrote the history which is why so few people know about East India Porter.

I already made mention of this in my above post:

The other beer that was shipped from Britain to India was a hoppy Porter (East India Porter): http://www.beeradvocate.com/mag/6212/east-india-porter/

Did you read the link I provided?:astonished:

Didn't mean to rain on your parade
I was simply emphasising that Porter was the majority of beer shipped to India ; certainly that was in the link but not everybody either notices or clicks on links.
Yes, I've read it , soon recognised it as Ron's deathless prose , I'd read it some time ago anyway.

My recollection is it was a Martyn Cornell piece that I read. It's been a couple years so I'd have to look for it again. I may have spoken (posted) out of turn. If I find it I'll reference it.

    Thanks!

P.S. Do you have the Mitch Steele book on IPA? If not I would very strongly recommend that you buy and read that book.

This is referencing a secondary fermentation, sir. Not primary. But your sarcasm is nevertheless noted and appreciated.
