I recently got a new fridge, so I moved my old fridge to the basement and got one of those digital temp control devices.

fridge was working fine before attaching the controller, after 1 night with the controller, fridge no longer works. Disconnected controller, fridge still broken.

is it possible that this thing broke my fridge? any idea if its something i could easily fix myself?

right now I have a broken fridge, a useless temp controller, and beer fermenting too warm :slight_frown:

Not unless your fridge broke by being powered and unpowered. This could happen over time, if the cycles were very short. But after one night...not likely.

This is more likely the cause, i.e. something failed due to being jarred. Or it was ready to die anyway. Coincidences do happen.

How long after moving the fridge until your turned it back on?

I ask because if you had the fridge moved in a horizontal position at any point while moving it- the compressor does not like this. You usually have to wait a few days before kicking it back on.

It may have just been its time to die; I doubt the temp controller did it in , but it is possible.

Maybe let it sit a few days and try kicking it back on.

How exactly is it broken? Maybe check the wiring/electrical for something that might have jarred loose or gotten cut during the move.

I assume it was working for the night you plugged it back in; or do you know for sure?

I waited about a week after I put the fridge in the basement before powering it up again, but the first time I powered it up again, it was with the controller. So maybe it was the move downstairs that broke the fridge...

As far as I can tell, it seems like the compressor never kicks in anymore, it was a pretty loud fridge(it was old) and you could always hear it when the compressor kicked in, but anymore.

So much for my dream of temp controlled fermentation, and does anyone want to help me haul this old broken fridge out of my basement?

I had an extra fridge moved into my basement about a year ago. Quit working less than a week later, but I was able to replace the motherboard and it's back up and running. Cost me less than $100 on Amazon to replace that part. I'd try to figure out exactly what's wrong before calling it a total loss.

If it's any solace . . . I paused for a minute of silence during happy hour in respect for your loss.

I wouldn't punish the controller . . . as Vikeman said, the only thing it does is switch the outlet on and off. Your dilemma sounds like life in my house: because I live in a marine environment, everything I touch "breaks". Don't think I could make it without beer . . .

You probably don't have the controller hooked up incorrectly. Fridge's are easy to fix, I do it for a living.

Do you have a way to check if the compressor is getting power? If it is and it's not even trying to start it might be a relay.
