Hey everyone, So my girlfriend is down in Houston for a few days and while I was just there a few months ago I didn't grab anything to bring back to NY. I'm just wondering what out there is good and hard to find that I should have her bring back up for me, I had a few of the local beers but I'm looking to see if theres any local out there that would be worth bringing back up. Feel free to respond or PM me if you have any ideas. Thanks for the help.
I found that the Live Oak Hefe is amazing! While I am not sure how close it is to where she is at, if it is, you won't be disappointed.
Saint Arnold's in Houston has several very solid beers she might bring back. My favorite is their Barrel Aged No. 5. A bourbon barrel aged scotch wee heavy that weighs in @ 12.5 abv. Any of their Icon series is equally as tasty and their Endeavor imperial ipa is definitely worth a shot.
Jester King. All of it. Also, what ^this guy said. TX is part of the southwest forum for some reason. Probably because silly yankees run this site. Clearly, the Republic of Texas deserves its own subforum. LOL.
That's true but the SW forum states that it includes TX (all of it). This is a big ass state (I say that humbly to Alaska) and we are right in the middle so we usually get lumped into the SW in spite of the fact that I can get to FL from Dallas quicker than I can get to AZ...
I'm a New Yorker too and I was in Houston for work last year and I really liked the stuff that I tried from St. Arnold and Karbach.
If your girlfriend is going to be around on Monday... Karbach F.U.N. Release 007 Bourbon Barrel-Aged Hellfighter is coming out. It's probably the best bottled barrel-aged stout/porter in the state. Live Oak Hefe is great... but she'd need to find a place that does growlers, as it's not bottled. I'd also suggest finding some Austin Beerworks beers, specificially The One They Call Zoe (I believe HEB down there carries them). I'd take a peek at seekabrew.com and compare TX to NY. There might be some beers distro'd here that you can't get there in NY.
You can get a general idea as to what is available by going to the specs beer store website and "shop" online. But that won't list specialty stuff all that much. Jester King, Karbach, St. Arnold (specialty stuff only) are all solid choices.
