For those who have seen the Dubbel tasting thread on the 15, I’m searching for recommendations for Texas brewed Belgians, dubbels specifically. I’ve had some Adelberts in the past but it’s been a while. Who else is brewing Belgian beer in Texas that isn’t impossible to track down? Thanks!
There are multiple places that do Tripels. Real Ale, OHB, Bitter Sisters and more. Places do Quads because they're high alcohol beers. I think Braindead Brewing has a Dubbel but I'm not sure how good it is or other breweries that do here. Dubbels were my favorite Belgian beer style but I haven't been a fan of the attempts I've had locally.
Yeah, I agree there are a handful of styles typically made by Trappist breweries that have been made well in Texas. Triples and Belgian Strong Darks/Quads specifically. As well as any number of Saisons as that has been kind of bastardized here (obviously those are not made by a lot of Trappists). Though Dubbels are not one that a lot of Texas breweries tackle, and if they do it is not all that great. You would be better off getting one of the better Trappists like Westmalle, Chimay or St Bernardus. Even if they are a bit predictable, still really good.
The plan is to get a Trappist and a Texas brew and compare for funzies. Not sure which Trappist I’ll grab yet, but my total wine usually has Richefort, Westmalle and Chimay all on the shelf.
I always forget Rochefort 6 is their Dubbel. For some reason I always just thing of their 8 and 10, of coarse all are great.
We do! Its called Secret Church. I'm not sure if we have cans in stock currently but I'll try to remember to check when I go up there to dry hop later.
Braindead doesn't distribute cans to North Texas areas. They won't get down to San Antonio. I'm not sure how much they distribute kegs. I'm pretty sure the cans are just to buy at the brewery. I really wish I could get their excellent Pilsners and try there English ales without driving 40 minutes.
Has anyone seen La Trappe in Texas recently? I used to get their quad at my local Total Wine, but haven’t seen it in a long time now.
