By the way...I totally spoke to soon about aborting this topic. Amazing news all around.

Does anyone know why this seems to be an under represented style for Texas brewers? Is it because the national market already has it saturated?

If I walk into a bar and see DEBC, Deep Ellum Brewing Company, or (512) up on the wall with Stone, 60, and Lagunitas; I'd chose our locals everytime not because it was the homer thing to do, but because they are simply a better product. DEBC also does some awesome treatments for special taps (The cask IPA with Zythos was sublime) and I assume the Austin folk see similar things from (512).

I did a flight at the Saucer a while back and 512 won. That includes other IPA's from Lagunitas and Bear Republic.

We have a lot of work to do in Austin before we start thinking about heading to other cities. But, if we do decide to venture forth, Houston will likely be our first stop.

I agree that stash is very tasty when fresh. Seems like the latest batch had some issues with the bottle dating though. There is just a smudge of ink, nothing legible.
I think Lost Gold is excellent when very fresh, seems to fall off quickly to me though.
Hops & Grain Pale Dog is very good as well.

Great news from Austin Beerworks! I love their beers.

Best TX IPA? I'll put my money on 512 and Pinthouse Pizza.

And people mentioning double IPAs in an IPA thread... like bringing guns to a knife fight.

I sure hope we haven't seen the last of the Hop Zombie (and his Bride) with the departure of Amos and Swifty from UB's...

I've had pints of 512 and DEBC that ranged from sublime examples of IPAs to what someone might describe as a glass of grapefuit juice. Does this happen from brewing issues or are they just old kegs?

Had a pint of Stash and Fire Eagle last week at Austin Gingerman and I loved the Stash.

An IPA that tastes like a glass of grapefruit juice IS a sublime example of an IPA.

Sometimes a well made single ipa gives you more bang for your buck than a double ipa. I personally would take the single ipa from 512 or sixpoint over their dipa. I can drink more before getting sloshed and they're still almost just as good. I'd say its a toss up between 512 and debc single ipa's. they're both damn good and probably the best two from Texas.
