Greetings everyone! I'm a recent transplant to the Austin area from Virginia, and was wondering if anyone could provide some guidance on Texas specific brews/breweries to keep an eye out for when searching for new places. Thanks!

I was just in Austin a month ago. I didn't get a chance to go, but Jester King is in (more like around) Austin, and I know they make some high quality brews. You should try out St. Arnold's beers, I've had a couple and have been pleased with them. The St. Arnold's Bishops Barrel series is something you will want to keep an eye out for if you like barrel aged beers.

I can't think of the name of it, but there is a very popular craft beer bar off of 6th street in the downtown area. Hopefully someone else can chime in to help you there.

Don't forget to try Franklin BBQ. It was worth the 4 hour wait. Promise. BYOB for waiting in line / dining.

Brewery tours (note 2 tabs - one for breweries, one for brewpubs):

My general rankings of breweries in Austin:

I differentiate between brewpubs and breweries. I may not use the TABC definition since I count JK as a brewery and not a brewpub. In general, if it serves other beer and has food, I put it in the brewpub category.

Top tier: - I think they do everything good and have some unique offerings

    Hops and Grain
    Jester King
    Austin Beerworks

Next Tier: - Good beer all around

    512
    Live Oak
    Independence
    Adelbert's

Next tier: - they are not bad by any means, but they just aren't really doing anything special or unique

    Circle
    Rogness
    Thirsty Planet
    Infamous
    Solid Rock
    Oasis

    Last Tier - meh

    Twisted X
    Guns and Oil
    South Austin

    Brewpubs

Pinthouse, Black Star are at the top. Whip In could arguably be up here as well.
ABGB, Uncle Billy's NXNW sorta come in in the middle. They make good beer, but I find ABGB boring with their beers.

One last note. If you need anyone to help out drinking some of your Virginia stash, I am quite well versed in that area and would be willing to use my expertise to aid you.

If you're a college puke, Easy Tiger on 6th st would be the place for you. Craft brew and a biergarten where all the frat boys hang out.

The Whip In really should be included somewhere on that list, as well...

Thanks for the all the help, I truly appreciate it! Looking up Jester King and all their Wild Ale offerings has me excited to get out there and tour/sample some; looks like quite the place and a style I haven't gotten too involved in.
