Some time ago, I held a LIF in honor of great local BAs everywhere. The idea was that the winner of the LIF would share the bottle I sent with at least one BA in his local area without the means to trade for the more whale-ish, or at least the more highly sought-after kinds of beers that folks are interested in on this site. I didn't stipulate that this LIF should continue in the same manner, and as far as I know, it has undergone only one more iteration. Well, after having tied for first in yamar68's "something or other about music LIF" a few months ago, it is high time to begin a new LIF of my own. Last time, I only asked for the bottle number for the beer I sent. This time, I am taking a page from another LIF I saw recently (apologies for forgetting title/organizer). In the interest of it-forwardness and because it is that special time of year when material gain and selfish motivations abound, I'm asking you to be a bit more selfless.

    How it works:
    1. Be a good samaritan. Do a good deed for someone in need. Something like helping an old lady (or man...) change a tire in the rain, or buying a pair of shoes for a homeless guy.
    2. Report your deed here. Documentation is a plus, but the good, ol' fashioned honor system will do.
    3. Do as many good deeds as you'd like, but the winner will be chosen based on a singular act.
    4. I will choose a winner (lower 48 only, sorry) based on a combination of the response a given deed gets (in this thread) and my feeling about which gesture has been the most selfless. Selflessness is the primary goal. I'm not going to create a rubric...you get it.
    5. Share item 1. (below) with at least one BA who is either new or for some other reason inexperienced or unable to do much trading (think someone who would probably never try this beer otherwise).
    6. Begin another LIF with this premise within 3 months.

    What you win:
    1. A bottle from the upcoming Jackie O's release TBD
    2. A bottle of BCBS 2012
    3. A very classy Goose Island glass (it's that wine glass-looking thing)
    4. A couple of quality locals and/or wants

This will remain open until I return to Cincinnati on January 5, 2013. Happy Holidays!

In hopes that more people will see this and be able to act on it as they start their day, I'd like to reinforce that I want to give someone some free beer.

All of my local BAs are seasoned whale-hunters, so you can probably count me out of this one, but:

I did (or began) my good deed yesterday, prior to seeing this LIF, so if it doesn't count, I'll just do another good deed!

Either way, my family went to Costco yesterday, and I picked up a case of Goose Island Root-Beer for a buddy who gave me tickets to the Browns game the previous day, as a "Thank You". While there, looking at the ridiculously huge bags of rice etc... saying "who needs that much rice" (pretty much what I say every time I go in there) I decided to say, "Rice is cheap" and then it snowballed from there.

Our Costco bill yesterday included a 50lb "Sack" of rice, A bunch of Beans, 6 jars of Marinara (on sale  ) and 16 lbs of Pasta.

We're going to donate them to a soup kitchen etc. for the holidays. Not sure where one is yet, but we'll find it!

I'll post up a picture if my wife doesn't take it, and I make the drop-off.

there are 2 noobs that are local to me and I've taken them under my wing and hopefully they will be quality BA's and contribute to the community...

my "good deed" is ongoing... I have an elderly neighbor and I'm his "muscle" whenever he needs anything. I bring up his groceries and pack his car when he leaves to Florida. During Sandy I helped him bring in all of his outdoor furniture. I've pretty much adopted him as my grandfather even though sometimes he can be a pain. hahaha

I'm sure this won't count since me and my sisters have been doing it semi-regularly for over a year now, but there's a homeless couple with a huge German Shepherd and whenever we go to WalMart, probably every other week, we make it a point to buy them at least a case of water, some fruit, granola bars, and go next store to PetCo to buy their dog at least a 15 LB bag of the same all natural food my dogs eat plus treats or bones. I work in a pet store so admittedly I use a discount on the dog food and occasionally get it for free if a bag gets busted on shipment. I've never took pictures but I will next time for documentation if asked for.

Cool idea. Win or lose, its great to see someone being rewarded for doing something good!

This year, we've decided that the best way to be thankful for what we have is to share it with others. As a family we're only getting 1 present each, and spending the rest of the money we otherwise would have spent to "adopt" a local family in need. The families in this program usually have several children who would otherwise receive little/nothing at the holidays. So we'll buy them a tree, and a whole bunch of presents from a list they prepare.

Even our 12 year old is on board with this, despite the fact that it means a lot less "stuff" for him this year. (It's impossible to provide "documentation" of this, since its an anonymous program, but its a done deal.)

Thanks again for promoting selflessness and giving!

There is a homeless man in my area who I see every morning on my way to work. He is not out asking for money or anything he just scans the paper for jobs he may be qualified for. A few days ago my wife and I bought him some clothes, got him a hotel room so he could get cleaned up and I got him an interview with my boss. We decided to hire him as a technician. Hopefully this job will get him back on his feet.

I wasn't planning on drinking any more tonight but I just opened a Zombie Dust so my brother wouldn't have to drink alone.

I love promoting selflessness, and by no means will I stop trying to help those less fortunate than me, especially those with animals, but I concede to homebrewer88. Hell, on the off chance I win I'll insist he get the package or if he don't win, I'd send him a mixed 6 of Cali locals. This man deserves the win

Thanks. This is probably the best decision I have made in a long time not only did I get to help someone out but he is one of the hardest working men I have ever seen.

Sitting at breakfast at the bottle sale, having sampled the beers to be sold, here is what the winner will receive:
    1 bourbon barrel brick kiln ( http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1432/87719 )
1 rum barrel brick kiln (rum barrel aged barleywine)
And if you've been very good this year,
1 bourbon barrel skipping stone (bourbon barrel aged quad)

Hopefully this provides some incentive to continue these deeds, and remember this is open till january 5.

Despite being in this, I think homebrewer88 should win, but I wanted to add that we also convinced the entire extended family to forego gifts for each other this year and donate all of the funds to Austin Pets Alive instead.

They are a local animal rescue outfit that does great work and is facing some serious financial difficulties this year. I'd rather we give to those who need it (both people and animals) than just buy more stuff for ourselves that we don't really need.

    Cheers!
