Could you limit yourself to a $50/month beer budget?

In the summer, possibly, but stout season, no way!

$50 is already toward the max of what I spend on beer in a month. I do get a $25 gift card each month for my shop, but I'm not sure how that factors into it. I really don't drink all that much. Strong focus on quality, and I don't do bombers - simply because they're really not all that available in my market, which is probably a good thing.

This is where you tell the wife she needs to take a second job...at a brewery.

Have your cake and eat it too! I have a batch of homebrewed Trillium Fort Point Pale Ale fermenting right now.

    Homebrewing is the answer!

    Cheers!

Our hockey costs are going to just about triple very soon, so I've been looking at cutting back as well. The idea of sticking to $50 a month seems very fair to me since I only drink (for the most part) two days, maybe three days a week. I could probably get by on a decent pick six for just a bit over $10. One other thing I have going for me is that as I near 1,000 beers, my FOMO is starting to diminish exponentially. Leaves more money for tried and true offerings.

I have also noted to myself that I really, really, really need to work my cellar down. I can probably feature on NBS one "big beer" rated 90+ for the next 3 months or so without going to the store, plus several other specimens that honestly need drank down. I'd honestly be happy if my cellaring was reduced to Samichlaus, Double Bastard, Expedition and BA GBS. I really don't think I need much else hanging around for the apocalypse!

Its getting beers when you go out that gets you. And getting a separate 6 pack for each party you attend. I do think about stocking up for the week and only drinking from the fridge. And then taking some of those beers when going to a party or something. I would probably save a lot.

Yeah but what's the point of living without having any fun?

I've done a similar thing. I'm not what one would call wealthy - I cut out anything in a bomber format and now I buy cheaper - yet delicious and fresh beers. I throw in some Sierra Nevada and Sixpoint and I happily get by.

I've considered this. I can get a 24 pack of tecate for like 10 bucks. Then get a good six pack. 20 bucks for the month, the sacrifice could be worth it.

I went form spending $200 a month on beer, to about $30. My wallet defiantly seems fatter. I think I went a little to hard when I first found craft beer. Oh well, ya live and learn.

I drink 2 cases of beer a week, so... no.

Ironically, just before I opened my computer, I was thinking about trying to limit myself to $ 50.00/ WEEK. That will require some work and ingenuity.

Who said I wasn't having any fun? As I said before, I don't have any plans to change my beer spending habits any time soon.

If I were you @lambpasty , I'd get a reasonable 12pk or case (SN) for a good price ($10-25). I'd then put the extra money toward 2-3 Trilliums. This way I'd be able to drink when I wanted to and really savor those 2-3 awesome beers when you could.

As for me, I could easily do it. I've been cutting back since we moved to a new house last month. Think I've been around $75 for the past 2-3 months. I limit my beer store trips and my FOMO. There are plenty of other beers out there to try that are reasonable that you could get variety in your life with decent craft beers. Just go to the store when you need beer and drink every beer in your fridge first.

As said, 12 packs in MA can be had for $ 12-15 or so. Start there.

You're buying cases of SN in CT for under $17?? Where? or by "case" do you mean 12 pack?

But to answer the question, There's no way I can do $50 a month, especially if that is house hold budget as my wife likes craft beer as much as I do. $100, maybe, even that would be tough.

    a) Only have beer on the weekends
    b) purchase six packs $9/ 12 packs $15

Do this and you'll easily manage $50 a month budget.

You can make 5 gallons of home brew for way less than 50 bucks. Not sure how that'd work in an apartment or in-laws place though.

Don't think about it as <$10 six packs. Here's what I do, partially because I'm poor, partially because I'm cheap:

"Splurge" every other week and try to keep it under $25. A couple weeks ago, I bought Jacks Abby (Sunny Ridge) at $8.99 and Ipswich Oatmeal Stout ($8.99) and a bomber of Singecut. I think it was $25.10 or something. That lasts two weeks (I actually have two JA and two Ipswich left). Repeat with equally valued beers in two weeks.

So much good beer out there that isn't in a $13.99 25.9 oz bottle.

$10 a week is the world I'm living in, start extreme couponing for diapers to off-set the cost off beer. Congrats on the baby!!

I'm right there with ya man, I too have one on the way and will have to cut back significantly. For me Lagunitas is always a great choice, and they have tons of beers in the range you're looking for. (plus many are stronger in alcohol which means you dont' need several in one sitting.
