    For you lazy bastards

The first time you will be able to buy Deschutes Brewing’sThe Abyss will be on November 13th, 2014. 22oz bottles and draft will go on sale at Deschutes Pub.

Barely 1/4 of the beer is aged in barrels, and yet it turns out beautifully, with just the right amount of barrel influence. I love me a good barrel-bomb as much as the next guy, but I really love the subtleties of The Abyss!

It should hit anywhere in the Deschutes distro footprint.

Really? Did 2011 go through a magical voodoo wormhole. Did a 4 year vertical 2010-2013 back in April or May and just like every other time 2011 was the least favorite, so much licorice. After the initial 2oz pours and verticals the 2010 was voted best and bottle was drained first with 2013 and 2012 close for 2nd and 3rd with 2011 still with almost half a bottle left at the end of the night. I even got a 2011 last year in a BIF and was super sad but not fully because it allowed me to do a 4 year vertical :stuck_out_tongue:

I'm loving last year's now though  can't wait to get this year's and do a 5 year vertical even though 2011 will still probably be crap.

I really liked it. Full disclosure, I drank a 2012 Parabola right beforehand so palet could have been off. 2010 is consistently the best though. Did 3 verticals last year and 2010 won every time

You know, until the infection set in, it was my favourite fresh Abyss ever.

2010 destroys the other vintages, IMO.

This. Had 2010 at Flying Rock in Denver last year and it was the best of the three or four releases that I've had.

I wish, but the first year we had Deschuttes here in MN was 2010 :stuck_out_tongue:

Had a 2011 last night it was fantastic. Very smooth. The tobacco flavor thinned out. It was nice to try an aged stout where the barrel does not dominate. I might pick up a couple of these to cellar.

This is one of the reasons I moved to Boise. It's nice being able to buy this without a fight.

I think this date is inaccurate. The Deschutes website still says there is no release date, and this appears to be a retread of the announcement from 2013.

Am I really the only one let down by abyss? I'll still try it but not really keen on getting bottles.

Had a 2010 a few months ago and it was fantastic. Would love to see what this stuff would taste like 100% barrel aged tho.

This is one of my absolute favorites. I love Deschutes' gentle use of the barrel--enough to bring some flavor, but subtle enough to let the other flavors shine.

I'll be in Portland in early December - is there any chance I'll actually be able to get a bottle? My brother was there earlier this year and snagged a vintage from a brewery event, but he'll be sharing it with friends and family at Christmas while I'm a couple thousand miles away. It'd be great to be drinking the same thing on the other side of the country!

Yes, but not in huge quantities. I had to hit several stores to manage to get 4 bottles, and it took a good number of misses to get that many hits. Sometimes the best luck is with the less popular (in terms of beer selection) Whole Foods locations. I think I ended up getting 3 over the course of a week at the WF Westwood.

I am with you! Its not the best...its definitely better than average...I think there is some decent batch variation from year to year, that or it always needs 2-3 years to sit.

Thank you. I will definitely try Whole Foods, although I haven't had much luck at them previously. I guess it just takes hitting up a bunch of locations.
