Really...? http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/0...monopoly-is-broken-is-mocked-on-social-media/ Or perhaps the should just:
Even though our system is far from perfect here in BC (is improving) articles like this give me a better appreciation of what we have.
Wow. I'm so sorry for our Ontario beer brothers and sisters... what a bunch of fear mongering bullsh*t I'm actually having a hard time thinking of anywhere else in the world where this crap happens. If you can name a place, I'm sure it's a great vacation spot...
It is a sad state here compared to the rest of the country. The few that are in power are out of touch with what is going on and what the revenue potential as well as job growth that could occur. Even a lot of the population including people I know are quite ignorant and plain don't care. I find this add really interesting because the big three sell beer right across the Ottawa river in Quebec in that horrible fashion some at large discounted price (Costco) compared to Ontario prices... and life is just dandy there!
You mean government liquor sales monopoly? Afaik only the Nordic countries share this trait with Ontario. Funny thing is none of them are bad places to visit.
I saw that commercial on TV and I honestly hope that it actually galvanizes people to support breaking up the monopoly. Heck, I hope people saw that commercial and thought "Ontario is thinking of offering Beer in convenience stores? Where do I sign up!"
I made the mistake of getting into a debate with some clown on Facebook about this issue... Turns out he worked for TBS, so has a vested interest in the monopoly remaining in place. He claimed TBS had the same or better selection than Alberta. Despite me telling him that I lived in Calgary for over 6 years and can speak first-hand of the limited selection Ontario offers. He also claimed beer prices would increase 25-30% if they were to open the market up. I'm willing to take my chances... At the end of it he made some comment about "watered down US garbage beer", clearly he's not into craft beer. Unfortunately, it's idiots like that who are pushing against any initiatives to remove the barriers in our "prohibition Province".

Yeah, facebook debates never end well. I have learned that well myself... Check out this sun new story. Actually, so should 'he'. http://www.sunnewsnetwork.ca/video/featured/prime-time/867432237001/free-our-beer/3500398826001
Love it or hate it, The Beer Store/Brewer's Retail is still a product of Ontario's traditional view on booze of all types. Although restrictive to the point of really pissing folk off its helped to forge a relatively reasonable attitude to drinking. And its the price you pay for not having a 'culture' of drinking like Glasgow.
If you think Ontario has it rough don't venture through Saskatchewan. They are starting to allow private stores but it's slow. The problem here is that once it starts with some crowns it will end badly with all crowns. I work for a crown and its not a lie when they say things can jump in cost big time.
Still trying to understand the argument of price increases. I guess the big macros will be charging more to small stores due to logistical costs (transportation, inventory management, etc) which makes some sense. But 25-30%? Just goes to show how little the actual beer costs to produce. I really don't care that much. I'll be an old man before I see craft bottle shops in my area. Hello, Michigan. Thank you for being steps away.
