So I was passing through Indianapolis last week and stopped at a beer store. Before I left my hometown, I had read that HotD can be found in certain stores there. Here's what happened...
After seeing a Dogfish Head shelf, I asked the clerk if they carried Dogfish Head. She said she needed to ask the manager. As I waited by the counter for her return, they both walked out of the back room and he was saying to her, "Now this is a perfect example of someone that thinks they know about craft beer but really doesn't know anything." He then looked at me waiting and said, "The reason I say this is because you think you know about craft beer, but you don't know anything. If you did you would know that Dogfish Head pulled out of our market a year ago." Being from out out town, I said, "I was not aware of that. Then do you carry Hair of the Dog?" He rudely replied, "Isn't that made by the same people!??" I sarcastically replied back, "Uh, no I don't believe it is." I kindly sat down everything I was planning on purchasing and walked out.
Later that day, I was at a brewpub and ordered their IPA. When I did, my server said, "I love our IPA. It reminds me of Dogfish Head's Two-Hearted Ale."
C'mon people. Apparently us BA's need to get our learn on, so we can compete with the educated, beer-serving public.
***I know this scenario doesn't happen every day, but I had to get this story out of my system and tell some people who can a sympathize (or not) how I feel.

In response to your first story, I think the appropriate thing to do after he mentioned that HOtD was made by the same people as DFH was to say "Now this is a perfect example of someone that thinks they know about craft beer but really doesn't know anything" to the clerk and then walk out.

I think you did a good job. I wouldve walked out too. I mean you could explain you are from out of town. I wouldve been a bit more dickish with his "Same people comment" and went off.

So the brewpub makes their own IPA and the server says DFH 2Hearted is a comparison? Wow.

    Cheers!

This is why I always play dumb until I know who I'm dealing with. Then I decide to either keep playing dumb or engage in conversation.

Honestly, it's never worth even getting a little bent out of shape. Life's too short.

What a penis. I would have plopped the beers down and walked out just as you did. I'd also take the time to write to the owners about the clowns that work there.

Just walk out and give someone else your business. It should put him out if its a craft heavy store. If not, then whatever. Increased craft sales at another store should weaken his allotment.

While the store workers seem to be jaggoffs, ignorance of the general populace is common in EVERY field. Any field you specialize in or know a lot about, you will constantly come across people who know little to nothing about that field. As a biologist, I can't even count how many times I've had to tell people that harvestmen aren't spiders, that birds don't abandon their chicks if you touch them, etc. That's ignoring the unfathomable (and mostly willfull) ignorance when it comes to evolution. You just have to bite your tongue and move on or become the equivalent of the crazy preacher wearing a billboard on the street corner.

It goes both ways. There's daily misinformation on this website too.

    Store name?

I want to call and ask if they carry Pliny the Younger, Canadian Breakfast Stout, Black Tuesday and/or Westvleteren.

I'm no apologist for assholes, but I do want to add that merely having managers of bars/stores who have the faintest idea about craft beer beyond "I guess I should carry a couple Sam Adams things and Harpoon IPA" is something not to be taken for granted even now.

A nice icy, "I'm from out of town and didn't know that---do you always treat your customers this way?" might have given the dork some food for thought.

    But I doubt it.

I was told by the dining room manager of a local brewery that my growler of Bullpen Pale Ale (hoppy PA) had skunked because of oxidation, not the fact that they had prefilled the growler that morning and left the clear glass growler in a fridge with a clear door right under the light. I still have trouble going back.

He actually made me and him do a blind taste test against beer straight from the tap. I think I know what the ass end of a skunk smells like.

From a customer perspective, I would have laughed and walked out. From a retailers perspective, I would have written up the employee and told them that if they ever said anything like that in the presence of a customer they'd be fired.

Yeah that seemed pretty condescending from the manager.
Lost a customer, got what he deserved.

The server issue is like some said above. When you specialize in knowledge of something you can't expect others to have that same knowledge or you'll constantly be correcting people. And people tend to dislike being corrected.

You see a lot of this in car dealerships as well. They have base knowledge in the products they move and a real car nut can spot a fake a mile away. This makes for entertaining exchanges when you see how far they'll take the BS. Unfortunately, not everyone is as passionate about the things we hold dearly, even if they're the ones selling them to us.

I would never go in that store again. With that being said Ive had issues with server's before. One of my notable memories was when I went to a local bar, who advertises that they have large varieties of craft brews. I saw that they had Franziskaner, when I ordered it, they came out 10 minutes later with what was clearly and IPA. I drink Franziskaner on a weekly basis, along with a long list of IPA's so I definately know the difference:astonished:!! When I asked him about it, he replies that it was Franziskaner, and I need to learn my different beer types....Needless to say I walked out quite frustrated.

Was at a brewfest and I asked the St. George rep what ABV their beer was, since it was not listed. He answered, I thanked him and kept walking. Apparently he thought I was some jackass trying to get drunk, because I heard him making fun of me as i left to the others around the booth that it wasnt gonna get me f*cked up enough. If the guy wasnt such a dumbass he might have noticed my glass was already full of beer, so where would I put it? Needless to say, I changed my plans about returning to that booth.
