They made single hop versions of their Humulus Lager as well that were available at Sierra Nevada's festival and they had them in the taproom also. They weren't super hoppy but as close as they will get. They had Mosiac, Citra, Simcoe, Centennial, and Chinook.

They don't need an IPA. Last time I was there it was standing room only on a Friday night ... they seem to be doing alright.

Fridays, Saturdays, and early Sundays the place is a madhouse. Go on a Wednesday night though and you can enjoy your beer in relative peace.

Some brewers just don't want to brew an ipa. the Bruery is doing just fine without one. Hell, I don't care for 90% of their beers. That's whyh we have so many great brewery's in the LA/OC area that has some of the best ipa's/dipa's in the west. We can go up against the big boys south of us. Lost Abbey did their first ipa last year and it was great. If the Bruery does make their first ipa then I will try it. Otherwise move on to the other great SoCal beers we are so blessed with.

Their business model is selling $20 big bottles to higher end beer clientele. IPA's are more for the layperson and they don't feel they can get away with selling IPA's at a $20 price point. Would be like Ferrari deciding to make a commuter car.

They announced a couple months ago that one of the new beers for 2014 is "So Happens It's Tuesday" which is going to be a lower ABV version of Black Tuesday that comes out mid-year.

Wait, if everyone gets excited about something isn't that the defining characteristic that makes it exciting?

Why didn't Miles Davis put out a heavy metal album, or Scorcese make a Rom-com? They have a philosophy to their line up that seems to be working financially. I'm sure they could/would brew an IPA if they needed/wanted to.

The better question given their line up is why don't they brew a quad? I'm pretty sure I could get on board with that.

If they did then there'd just be one more $16 Bruery bottle sitting on the shelf that I wouldn't be buying.

Came here to make a joke about Bruery beers being way to expensive.

Left because joke was already made 3 times over.

    Good work, BA

Beat me to it. For proof you can't get away with selling $20+ IPA's, see also Nebraska Hop God.

Oh they have a rhyme and reason why they don't make IPAs. They just don't reveal their true reasons for their decisions to the general public on brewery tours.

That is a legitimate question as that is their bread and butter style. They should be targeting a $25-$30 quad with a BA rating of around 4-4.25. I'll stick to my world class $13 St. Bernardus Apt 12.

As mentioned above, the market is pretty saturated with competition doing IPA style well within just minutes of the Bruery. Bootleggers and Bruery started up around the same time, then Noble, now Valiant (not to mention Taps, Anaheim, Old Orange, Tustin Brewing, etc) and more opening soon. Bruery found a way to differentiate and get wider notice than than just north OC. That said, their single hop series last year was well done and what I was drinking there while it lasted.

Well, to be fair, the beers they charge that much for are usually barrel aged or something like that. They would probably make a barrel aged quad and charge a little over $20 for it, or maybe add some fruit or make it really high alcohol (like BT) as well and charge $30. It really is a wonder that The Bruery hasn't done this.

Because no one would pay $12 for a bomber of an IPA from them when there's 5 others probably on the shelf right next to it.

I wish they'd start bottling in a smaller format before making an IPA. I have only bought a few Bruery beers for this reason, 750ml of beer is a bit too much for me on a regular basis. I'd much sooner buy a $14 4-pack than what they bottle now.

This. I get their business model, but six-packs (or even four-packs) would go a long way. It's not an exact comparison, but Ommegang makes smaller bottle formats and they get along just fine. The Bruery could do the same eventually (I hope).
