In a nut shell, the family is VERY well off. There was alot of capital available up front to do things that most breweries have to build up to do. Commercial real estate isn't a bad thing to be in.... http://www.mpproperties.com/MichaelRue.html

The only brewery so far that has succeeded in getting me to shell out 30, 35, $40 per bottle of beer. They won me over with their aged beers. But I really can't be paying more than say 20$ for a beer EVER from now on. I think i need to set a limit.

Fruet is just freaking nuts and cant wait to open 2 Turtle Doves

This is exactly how I feel. I can't get their limited stuff and everything I've purchased off the shelf has been a disappointment.

I am a fan of Bruery and CCB. Just had Trade Winds and Maduro Brown last night at a place that had them on tap. I find myself trying Bruery selections on tap, and Cigar City bottles.

Hype. They know most of you guys are dumb enough to pay what you're told regardless of quality and they're right. Pretty smart actually.

yep. and until people stop lining up and buying (there was a line for 40$ 2 turtle doves when i was there) they have no reason to do anything different. OC beer geeks got loot cakes

$40 2TD does kind of put trade value in perspective. 2TD is, actually, delicious, but i wouldn't in a million years pay $40 for a bottle of it. $20 is really pushing it. (edit: i'd pay $40 for the stuff you could trade 2TD for nowadays though...)

re: overcharging for low quality, i think their beer is high quality.

I agree that most of their beers are well-crafted. Some people take issue with the price point, and that's a reasonable gripe. But if most of their beer was only mediocre I doubt they'd still be in business, let alone growing. Hype will only take you so far.

The $40 is crazy but that example is sort of unfair, as when the beer was out I picked up 6 bottles or so ranging in price from $15-$19. I'd pay that again for that beer.

same. just funny that it can be rereleased for $40. it's not "gouging" either; obviously people were willing to pay it, and it's not like you can just buy that beer any day. still a bit much for 2TD though.
