I've been trading for a bunch of Bruery sours recently. It takes more beer on my end, but it will (hopefully) be worth it.

I just don't think the beers are very similar. Rodenbach uses vatting not oak barrels and Grand Cru is a blended beer. Rodenbach Vintage is their unblended release, which is much more comparable. It does cost less than Oude Tart by a dollar or two, when available, which is very rarely. I would totally recommend it.

By all means drink Rodenbach as much as you want, but just because Grand Cru costs half as much doesn't mean the other is overpriced. Is a Mercedes overpriced because a comparable car costs twice as much as a Hyundai?

Rodenbach Vintage has been a "shelf turd" here all year. 2010 Vintage. Same price as Oude Tart which is gone. This is OK with me because I like Vintage a little bit better.

    Oude Tart = 4.25
    Rodenbach Vintage = 4.5

If you wait too long, it might be a vinegar bomb. Drink it right now!

2010 tastes perfect to me in 2013.

You may not think that Rodenbach and Oude Tart are very similar, but you've used the general consensus to back your claim that Bruery beers are good, so I'm gonna use general consensus to say that the beers are comparable. So we're not comparing a Mercedes to a Hyundai. Instead we're comparing a Mercedes to a BMW. Yeti and Darklord are both RISs with different flavor profiles but are both within the same style. I would compare them to one another just as I would any other RISs. Would you take issue with that?

It's a matter of personal taste. If you like Grand Cru more than Oude Tart (or Rodenbach Vintage for that matter) then more power to you, you just saved $10. However, I don't think personal taste dictates whether or not something is "overpriced." You may perceive that one has a better value to you personally, which is fine.

We could talk in much larger generalities. Is $20 for a 750mL bottle of an American Wild ale too expensive? I say no. It is less than Russian River pricing, it is less than Lost Abbey pricing. It costs a little more than La Folie. I think it is is line with the competition.

I'm not saying it's not expensive. I'm saying it isn't overpriced.

Lost Abbey Red Poppy is $32 per 750ml. Damn good beer, but I don't have a problem with calling it over priced compared to every beer mentioned in this thread.

I never claimed that it was anything other than personal taste. You'll notice a lot of "I this" and "I that" in my posts. And for he record, I never once said "overpriced." I did call $37 for Fruet outrageous, but again, I wouldn't pay that for a single of anything given how much I make.

I'd love to dislike a high priced package of beer.

    Unfortunately, the opposite usually occurs!

Something is only overpriced if the retailer cannot sell it.

I actually love their beer, and don't mind paying a little premium. It's obvious its market price. They priced it...

In your opinion. People who spew their thoughts like it's law really piss me off. You may not think it's a good sour, you may also not know a damn thing about any sour beer period. Making a blanket statement and trying to pass it off as fact when you've failed to prove (and will never be able to) to others you know what you're talking about is stupid.

Awesome reading skills sparky. Half of the replies are people saying the beers suck and aren't worth the price. That's the people I'm aiming at. Go back and reread the thread. Pretty clear who I'm talking about.

The Bruery made a gueuze with low carbonation. That alone speaks volumes about the whole operation.

I could never say uncatagorically "It's too high." It really doesn't make sense as a generality. It means that perhaps it's "too high" for you - period. End of story. Who the hell are any of us to judge what's "too high a price" etc. for anyone else?

Keep in mind the OP was asking whether the beer measures up to the price he has to pay. That's the whole point of this thread. "It's too damn high" may be either too sarcastic or not detailed enough, but it's an answer that attempts to address the OP's question. Chill.

Not when the topic has nothing to do with the quality/taste of the beer. If you want to shit on a beer because in your opinion it's not for you, well, you're an idiot. I'm no hop head but I don't shit on IPAs or the people who drink them because of it. The topic is and has always been pricing, not value, and that has nothing to do with what you or anyone else thinks of the beers in terms of taste/quality.

To answer the question, since it's failed to be addressed clearly, pricing for the South Atlantic area is usually:

Rugbrod, Mischief, Autumn Maple - $11
Saison Rue, Saison de Lente, Hottenroth - $8
    Oude Tart - $15
White Oak, Xmas series - $12
Reuze, Smoking Wood, Sour in the Rye - $18

Who here is a member of their Preservation Society and wants to share how it all works? It says it's $54 a quarter and you get three big bottles. Do I have to pay for shipping? Are there any other benefits apart from the three included bottles? Like maybe access to some of there limited releases like Black Tuesday or Chocolate Rain?
