The Bruery Terreux

    Hey there Society members,


    You are an extremely important part of our family here at The Bruery and we wanted you to be the first to hear this exciting announcement. So, here it goes...


    The Brueryâ„¢ is excited to announce the formation of Bruery Terreux, a new brand that will focus solely on farmhouse-style ales fermented with wild yeasts as well as oak-aged sour ales. The Bruery's original brand, will rededicate its focus specifically on experimentation with non-wild ales, modern twists on classic styles and aging beer in bourbon and other spirit barrels.


    Bruery Terreux, which translates to "Earthy Bruery", first and foremost takes inspiration from the earth, presenting flavors in as natural of a way as possible, as nature intended. Wort will be brewed on The Bruery's brand new GEA CRAFT-STAR brewhouse and then transported to their own facility a few miles down the road. All fermentation, barrel aging and packaging will take place at this second facility. A brand new Bruery Terreux tasting room will also be opened at this location in late 2015 where customers will have the chance to enjoy Bruery Terreux's offerings in a unique setting.


    Current brands from The Bruery that are brewed with wild yeasts or bacteria such as Saison Rue, Oude Tart, or Hottenroth Berliner Weisse, will be transitioned to Bruery Terreux. The recipes will remain the same, but will be overseen by wild beer specialists and will be bottled under the new branding. Exciting new beers will also be added to Bruery Terreux's lineup.


    More details will follow over the coming months. As this project is subject to approval from the City of Anaheim and the California Department of Alcoholic Beverages, details are subject to change. Please follow Bruery Terreux on Facebook, twitter and instagram for late breaking developments.


    For the time being, the benefits that you receive as a Society member will not be changing at all, but there may be some tweaks to the program in 2015 which will be to your benefit. Of course, you'll be the first to know when anything changes. For now you can keep on enjoying your beer as usual.

    I guess we will wait and see, Hopefully this doesn't mean 2 separate memberships. I dont think I'd be down with 2 memberships, unless they were only 150 each rather than 300.

    Perfect opportunity for them to brew a gose named "Sel de la Terre", "Salt of the Earth". I'll take 1% of the profits.

    I'm in for 2 separate memberships as long as it will mean more allocation for wild ales/saisons. And of course I can't wait for the second tasting room.

    Im gonna bet that they are. I could see them having one or two of the Terraux beers at the main tasting room and having one or two of the regular line in the Terraux tasting room.
    Their tasting room is super crowded as it is, this make ease it a bit, or it will just make it more popular and both will be crazy.
    My prediction- split memberships
    PS will get random stuff like now
    RS Bruery
    RS Terreux
    HS - will get access to both
    Or I could be totally wrong.

    Another way to squeeze more money out of society members if you want both styles.

    Either that or it'll create a bump in the price of the initial membership charge for each society by ~$100 and you get access to all brands. This would give them an increase in capital at the beginning of every year to be able to procure raw materials to brew. Then they would just sell the beer in allocations like they are now. Even if they had to take out a loan to get the new location/brand off its feet, a rise in membership cost would give them a huge start to pay down a majority of the debt (if any) incurred almost immediately.

    They did specifically say: For the time being, the benefits that you receive as a Society member will not be changing at all, but there may be some tweaks to the program in 2015 which will be to your benefit.

    My default mode may be cynicism, but let's see how this plays out before we get too concerned about worst-case scenarios related to split memberships, etc.

    To The Bruery: Please strive to ensure that any related "tweaks to the program in 2015" are ones that your member's would clearly identify as positives!

    How much of this split/addition is due to the magnitude of their inability to prevent lacto contamination in non-sour beer?

    Ha! No matter what they do someone will complain. They could make their bottles out of 24 carat gold and people would complain that it has a metallic taste and paying $30 means the beer shouldn't have that. I am nervous about the split but any changes they make will be viewed by some as getting screwed for money.

    See, I think the problem with tweaks that we would all identify as positive is that no such tweak exists. I would prefer, in fact I hope, this leads to additional separate societies. As I mentioned in a different thread, I'm planning on dropping my HS membership after this year due to the prevalence of high octane, sweet, barrel-aged blends. And those are great beers to be clear! Just too many for my tastes, which have shifted over time.

    Now, however, if I can get access to a society that only gets allocations from this new brand, there's a very high chance the Bruery keeps me as a customer.

    There are myriad paths the Bruery can take at this point, and maybe the answer is to offer a whole slew of society options with different tiers and brand mixes. But that would take some serious logistics and operations prowess, which I think, if nothing else, we can all agree the Bruery generally lacks.

    So I'm actually cautiously optimistic about this whole thing, despite having a similar natural inclination towards cynicism.

    I'd love a sours only society! I have enough big sweet beers to last me a while.\

    Edit: I was very much in the minority when they wanted to make the RS free for folks already in and open up a limited number each year, while getting rid of discounts and guaranteed allocations. We'll see if this is the case again.

    Clearly its a mirror of what Firestone did with Barrelworks. I foresee other breweries with sour programs making the same moves also since two big players in the industry have done so. As for the Society tweaks, we could talk about what ifs til we're blue in the face. If you don't like the changes, save yourself the money and do something that IS postive and donate it to a local charity. I look forward to the opportunities this opens up for The Bruery.

    All of it. They have been working on this split for months. My guess is someone over there saw an opportunity to create a separate brand and make money off of it versus just have two different facilites. Thats not me being cynical, thats just good business sense. Create buzz with a 'new' line of products under the umbrella of a well respected and established brewery, give it a cool name, new tap room to go with, heck they might as well be printing money at this point.

    I just hope they don't spend too much time with sour saisons as those are rarely if ever better than just OK.

    The correct route to take to avoid infection. But separate societies will suck. Will I have to work my way up to a sour Hoarder now?
