So recently I have been getting more and more Crowlers of beer from my local beer store. I love that they fight 2 of the 3 biggest enemies of beer (light and oxygen).

I know that with everything there are both pros and cons which leads me to the main topic of this thread...

What do you think of Crowlers?
    What do you like/dislike?
    What are the advantages/disadvantages?
And lastly would you take a Crowler over a growler fill?

I like 'em. Had my first one yesterday (Thanks to @woemad ).
I like everything except the size. I'd like to see 12-16oz crowlers.
Lightweight, recycleable, easy to take hiking, tubing, biking, etc.
Would certainly prefer crowlers over growlers.

I like them. No need to buy/carry growlers and they are GREAT if you are traveling and want to bring some goodness back home. The only downside I can think of is the 32 oz size (if you want more beer).

    I love the crowler option.
-I can make a purchase based on availability/convenience and then if I have to wait a week or so to enjoy it, no degradation has been apparent. (I do transport them cold).

I brewed with a big group across the country in the spring and the results were shipped as crowlers. Even the hoppy kolsch was clean and crisp.

Great sealing, and oxygen blocking, especially if the server fills it completely.
    Theoretically a longer shelf-life than a growler.
Don't have to lug a growler to a brewery, or in the case of states like MA, don't have to by new glassware every time (but of course the crowler cost is in the price).
Downside- cannot reseal, Open it and its go time.

I agree that at times the cost can pose an issue.

I understand your opinion on once you open it you have to drink it however in theory once you open a growler shouldn't you drink it as well?

Once the growler seal is cracked oxygen gets into the beer causing it to go flat and lose flavor profiles.

    Just curious about your opinion.

    Thank you for your insights.

Love crowlers, easy to ship, keeps beer happy longer. I'll take them over growlers or howlers 100% of the time.

Lots of places filling them improperly. Besides those places I like them.

I would agree. I fill them at my job and they are very easy to fill incorrectly.

Some people claimed to like regular cans over bottles because they kept out light, sealed better, and were better* for the environment. (*even though they aren't). I wonder if those same people now say they like crowlers better than growlers because they keep out light, seal better, and don't have a downside... even though they are clearly worse for the environment.

I grabbed a crowler of the Colorado Boy's stout when I was at a liquor store in Montrose Co, it was less than $5 which I thought wasn't bad. The bad thing was I cracked it my last nite there and consumed the whole thing. I think they are fine to share with friends, or to start the night off with, not to end the night with :slight_frown:. I prefer growlers because here in Texas they will fill any growler + I have a couple that I can keep Co2 on.

What do you think of Crowlers? I dig them. A lot of places won't fill howlers. Growlers are too big of a commitment. Crowlers are a good size for me.

What do you like/dislike? 32 ounces. Stating the obvious, there are already a lot of 12 ounce, 16 ounce and 22 ounce containers out there. 32 ounces fills in that wide gap between 22 and 64 ounces. I also like crowlers for a lot of the reasons already stated in this thread. The only thing I dislike about crowlers is that I wish more brewers would use them (hint hint Founders and Bells).

And lastly would you take a Crowler over a growler fill? I would take a crowler fill over a growler fill ten times out of ten.

I would agree that they are worse for the environment. This is obvious and for people that argue otherwise I would say they are being ignorant just to justify their own agenda.

However... I do believe they are better for the quality of beer.

Do you partake in Crowlers? If so what is your personal opinion on them? Both quality and practicality.

    Thank you for your insights.

Never heard of them, and howlers as well. Growlers are awesome though. I wonder if they are available in GJ.

    Cheers!

Crowlers are similar to a growler except in a can. It's a 32oz can that you fill with draft beer and then put it in a crowler machine that seals the can the same as any professional can you would get in any beer you typically would get in stores.

A fuckn' CAN! That's a pretty big can. And places have this machine as well? Are we talking brewpubs, bars, brewery's?

    Cheers!

If only you old re-seal them, say after a 12 or 14 or 16 ounce pour, thereby saving the rest for later.

If only you could wash, sanitize, and reuse them a zillion times...

If only, in short, they were a growler....

EDIT to add: but you know what, they are the best thing for traders, I just realized after I hit "enter." If I were a trader I would LOVE these.

A stupid name for a 32oz growler. See also, meowler for a mason jar (or the like) to go.

    Meh.

They're ok I guess. I still prefer regular growlers though for the reason of reuse > recycle and cost (a lot of places charge for the can it seems).

The only time I'd use them is for backpacking.
