I got the terrible message from FedEx last night stating "Your package has been damaged and the contents of one of your containers has leaked. You need to come and pick it up!"

I have probably shipped about 10-12 times for homebrew contests, trading, and gifts. This one being a Chirstmas gift for a best friend. It was 3 different barrel aged beers of mine (Imperial Stout in Bourbon, Old Rye Ale in Bourbon, and a Belgian Dark Strong in Merlot) that were all over 1 year old!! Pretty bummed that I had to call FedEx and tell them to destroy the package because I am unable to pick it up being that I am out of town.

Should I worry that they might flag me? I'm concerned because I shipped it via my work account. I don't want it to get flagged haha :astonished:

You're in Seal Beach. I work in Santa Fe Springs. I would like to try one of these! Have an extra?

    Cheers!

I lost a GI King Henry and a few others via UPS to CALI... took me months of trading with others and promises to make good on it! I traded away the bottle that I'd gotten in the deal just to make good on my end. It's heart breaking! Cost me 2xshipping and more beer than a $13 Barleywine should ever cost! LOL!!!... but I was really glad when I finally came thru on my end and I've hopefully made a new trade partner, and restored some faith in humanity!

I'd shipped via UPS through my work account. They broke a bottle. They simply discarded the entire package (probably went into someone's fridge) and sent a letter about the loss. No further repercussions. I now wrap every bottle in bubble wrap several times over, then line the top and bottom with more bubble wrap, then double box. Better safe than sorry.

They are in business of making money money by shipping packages. Aside from some over zealous clerks, I am sure no one cares. I had one package sent to me have a bottle break in transit, they removed the broken bottle and repacked it and sent it on its way. Aside from the missing bottle I would have never known something happened in route.

I normally put the bottles in ziplocks to avoid leaking through the box if they do break then bubble wrap over that

According to my FedEx account, I have a damaged package sitting in Seacaucus, NJ right now. I can't get any answers. I told them via email to just deliver it but I haven't heard back. How long after the incident do they normally call?

I'd count your blessings if they recognized a leaker package and asked you to come and get it. Most such packages hit the dumpster, or get returned to sender.

I just had my first bottle break in transit this week after 50+ trades without a problem. My heart sank into my chest when I heard the voicemail was from UPS, but the guy just wanted to know whether he should repackage everything and send it back to me, or on to the receiver.

That guy deserves a beer for his efforts then  I had a bottle break on me once, it was supposedly "destroyed". Sure, in someone's tummy.

How about designating a Fedex trustee to pick it up?

When I had a leaker at the local UPS hub, even though I was within minutes of the location, the lady said she could not let anyone pick it up other than the shipper, because if they let the addressee or someone pick it up, it would be completing a shipment that was against their policy. Should have just gone and pretended to be the shipper, but I wasn't feeling convincing against this by-the-book employee. Been a FedEx shipper since.

I agree. That guy's the man. The lady I talked with was not friendly at all. She wasn't willing to help. I had only two options, either "destroy" or pick up. She must have really liked what was in there and kept it for herself.
