I enjoyed this profile of Duvel Moortgat and learned a lot. Also got thirsty, lol. https://www.belgiansmaak.com/the-duvels-in-the-detail-duvel-moortgat/
My deceased wife did not drink in her later years, but if she felt like a nip it would be a Duvel. What a girl! I still keep it in the house.
One of my favourites but our damned liquor board dropped it from general list so I can't get it. I have a few in the cellar.
Good article but one mistake was when he called the Antwerp beer De Konninck by the name of Bolleke which is incorrect. The distinct glass they serve it in is called a Bolleke and the beer is called De Konninck. This beer fresh on tap is one of the loveliest beers you will ever drink. Having a beer with Chris Bauweraerts in Antwerp during the Modeste beer festival. It doesn't get any better than this any time of day or night!
Pretty sure that is not a mistake. Bolleke does refer to the glass, but ordering a bolleke in Antwerp means you're ordering that specific beer, which of course will be served in a bolleke. Bolleke is even in De Koninck's name for the beer. The author knows of what he writes. https://www.dekoninck.be/en/beers/bolleke
They actually changed the name to 'Bolleke' a few years back. Duvel sure know how to market their stuff. The author did some great podcasts in which he interviews a lot of interesting (mostly Belgian) beer people. Highly recommended! If they changed the name I stand corrected and yes I know when you are in Antwerp you order a Bolleke when you want a De Konninck, I have been there.
Excellent read; and thanks for posting it. The beer geek in me was especially jazzed about how many methods they use to keep the beer pale.
I bought another 4pack for a bit over $14. I have a feeling that when it sells out, it will be gone for the rest of my life, locally.
Very interesting read, thanks for sharing. I didn’t know that the original Duvel (Victory) used Scottish yeast strains. I also had no idea about Moortgat’s unfortunate involvement with ****s and fascism. Too bad! That said, if Duvel is not considered just about perfect as a beer, I don’t know what is.
In my teens, way back in the 80s, I was drinking (I admit, not tasting) De Koninck. Back then you could order either a Bolleke or a Fluitje Koninck. 'Fluitje' can be interpreted as a 'small whistle' because you can drink it 'in a whitsle' or it goes için 'like a whitsle'. I preferred a Fluitje over a Bolleke because a Bolleke as a bowl glass is more clumsy. Later, a Prinske came by but disappeared almost completely. Nowadays, there are no Fluitjes anymore. And yes, De Koninck got rebaptized as Bolleke. Strange. Anyway, I no longer drink it and this is not only because of the glass.
