It's not that, it's just... there are a bunch of people who just joined BA who think they're going to blow everyone's minds by saying they had an IPA or DIPA better than Pliny. I see no need to give them any attention. Because they're neither interesting nor novel. Also: the keg of Pliny at Toronado 26 was magical, and much better than whatever nonsense these guys are talking about.

There is almost an anger to it. Its like some people have to find something better than Pliny, post about and get angry about it all to show that Russian River isnt the best at something.
There are like a 100 stellar DIPAs out there now. Making a great DIPA is no secret anymore.

it's not limited to pliny, or beer. there are a lot of obnoxious contrarians who feel good when they can talk about how something everyone likes is "overrated."

pliny is especially bad for this in my opinion because it doesn't keep very well in the bottle. fresh pliny on tap is as good as it gets.

i think i like nelson a smidge more than pliny now but they both blow heady out of the water : )

False. The latest batch of Thrillseeker sucks. Melrose was OK.

I hate to add to the hype (if that's even possible) but there really isnt any other beer as consistent and well made as Pliny... and its $5 a bottle.

With so many options, i don't know if there is one ring to rule them all. When i get sick of trying new stuff i always go back to pliny/pig. Hopefully the rage calms down and RR beers become easier to obtain thru distro again, how i wish for back in the day, i love going to the brewery but the drive is 3 hrs. Please new beer take over.

Maybe reducing the rage is the actual goal of people that are downplaying the Elder.

    I dunno.

There's also "is [this or that highly rated beer] overrated?"

And "Does this year's release of [highly sought seasonal beer] different than last year's?"

I'd call it a three way tie. Zzzzzzzz.

2013 Pliny is overrated. The batches in 2012 were so much better. I know because I've cellared them the proper way, which is vertical.

These are some of the most obvious symptoms of BA's version of Eternal September...as long as craft beer continues to grow, these sorts of topics will be staples of the Beer Talk forum.
