Well, why did Jason and Tood create BA? Are we to ignore what fellow BA's have to say? I hope not. What's the point of these forums then? Not trying to sound overly philosophical, but just hoping others will realize why we have these forums and why we have BA. I've only been on BA for less than a year and I've learned so much from those who have gone before me. I don't claim to know everything about beer and in fact honestly don't know much about beer compared to a lot of people. I voice my opinion and read what others have to say and hope as I respect others' opinions who have done this longer than me that a certain respect is adhered to. Some BA's who know what they're saying and doing can be very useful, that's why we have that "following" option. With this in mind, I try to have an open mind with beer.

What if the "fake experts" are the real experts and actually have their own website where they make fun of BA's & RB's constantly and we don't know about it because it's a secret only real experts know?

i hear ya'. i quoted you more so because it's a reoccurring theme & seemed a good place to jump in. i wasn't aiming to specifically blast you on the issue.

i definitely think words like "knowledge/able" are misused too often. we seem to lose sight of the reality that opinion isn't fact and therefore isn't absolute knowledge. in terms of absolutes, styles blur by interpretation, glasses from the perception of which is the best/better typically builds from personal opinion too. knowledge like 1+1=2 is pretty universal. leaving beer in the sun to age is a no, no - again pretty universal. how to properly enjoy your beer in the proper vessel at the proper time of year/season -- screw whatever you read, i'll be the judge & jury, unless of course you're sponsoring.

Problem with getting to know about beer styles is that 90% of all that's written about them is (shall I be charitable?) imaginative.

From what I understand BA was created for the Bros to do beer reviews and post beer news and whatnot when it first started. They only let people start rating beer along with them later on.

how do you know they're more experienced? as i said in the other thread, this site has a real obsession with rarity / wales, and that becomes indoctrinated in new users as they come on board. how do they learn to review? by reading others' reviews. how do they know what's good? by seeing what others have rated as good, and comparing other beers against them. it's a field of relativity, and establishing standards of precedent means that certain biases and viewpoints become inherited.

to an outside observer, the lack of snpa on the top 100 over some low-bottle-count pale ale (wait, are there any pale ales on the top 100?) may be a travesty and a reason to dismiss the site culture entirely. so how do you operate from the assumption that anyone here has " more experience " than someone else?

it can't be review count, because there a bunch of top reviewers / tickers that are the beer equivalent of magic the gathering nerds. who the hell takes people like that seriously.

Zombie Dust is #20. I think the better question is "Why does anyone care about this list?" It's super meaningless and everyone knows it (or at least should).

The disconnect with the community and "regular" site has kept my reviewing and list browsing to a bare-bones minimum at this point. Curious to see if/when/how it all gets integrated.

When it comes to my opinion on beer my opinion is final (to me)

I have learned a ton from people on this site, others outside of the BA world and beer experts (Cicerone) and homebrewers. I have also met some "fake" experts and have learned some great information from them as well (how wrong can someone really be). When it comes to the "fake" experts or misinformed I just shake my head and keep saying yes your right and smile.

speaking of fake experts...i had the pleasure of getting word ***** the other night at a craft beer bar. first the guy was talking about women in the most disgusting way possible, loudly. then starts in on beer and i had to finally jump in when he said "russian river only makes good ipas everything else is amateur hour!". i got about 2 sentences in within a 15 minute period (not really trying hard knowing it would have lead to more arguing) and had to listen to him bash great breweries (the one i work for included, he didn't know) and finally the self proclaimed hop head only realized he was super drunk and left. i tried to agree with him more than once and he still just continued jabbering. i mean come on, he homebrews he knows everything right?

I never try to present myself as any kind of expert regardless of how much I know about beer, I only tell people I'm passionate about and share my opinions and suggestions. Yakking someone's ear off isn't going to get anybody interested, and trying to change someone's mind means you're missing the point of advocacy.

If I would have seen this event occur, rest assured this fellow would have had a rude awakening, and he would never see me coming! I do not tolerate disrespect to ladies, and I understand he is drinking away but enough is enough! I am sorry this occurred....
