John Courage Amber from Caledonian... had it in an English Pub around 1999-2000. First beer that was a WOW for me. Wish it was still available here in the states. Haven't seen it in over a decade.

My first beer ever was Strohs, as that was my dad's beer of choice back in the day. First beer I loved was Yuengling. Now I'm into sours and gose styles (still a newbie there). Sierra Nevada and Victory products took over for Yeungling years ago. These two are my go to brewers when sours are unavailable.

My journey to becoming a craft beer ***** all started with Moosehead, then spent some time with Sam Adams Boston Lager, and Torpedo finally sent me over the edge

Before I experienced anything other than AAL? The award goes to PBR. And afterwards, I would have to say Duvel.

    Honorable mention: SNPA

I still drink all 3, especially Duvel.

For me it was Orval. It is the first I tried instead of crap lager.

Aventinus...20+ yrs on, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Still in a very elite group of favorites, nothing else quite like it. Vitus would be it's replacement if Tap 6 ceased being available. Moonglow from Victory is pretty good... but Aventinus to me still tastes like nothing else.

Man O man, drank so much Dort back when that I could guesstimate where the keg was @ based on how it tasted. If it was heavier w/malt & a bit flat it was past the half way point...if it was bright, crisp & a lil floral it was recently tapped. Haven't had one in years...

Don't remember anything about it, but I do remember having it. Maybe a mistake? As it was brewed by FXMatt, it could have been a screw-up to ship it with some Saranac?

    1st "loved"? Ommegang Rare Vos.
Unlike a lot of you, it could have been SNPA, but I passed on it. :stuck_out_tongue: I knew that hoppy stuff should be fresh, but not the actual time scale. Me " CA to NY? Must be old." Maybe it was, but I never tried it. Just an occasional foray into Saranac Pale Ale, & mix packs, when in just the right mood. It wasn't until Ommegang's original 4 started showing up in the grocery stores ('97 or '98?) did I find anything that I couldn't wait to have again, & drink on a regular basis.

I love reading these threads when they pop up.

For me, i started drinking the typical beer in the late 90s at a way too early age, quickly settling on Miller High Life as the best of the bunch. Even today I still wont turn one down.

Around my junior and senior year of high school, my interest peaked from frequent radio ads, I tried Christian Moerlein lager and that beer was my first beer love. Even today i have had few American brewed helles lagers as good as that beer. It sparked my interest to experiment.

Shortly thereafter I found myself in college with beer money being a serious consideration for purchases. I recall frequent purchases of Whitbread Ale, Mackeson XXX, and Huber Bock. The Whitbread was my favorite regular drinker at the time, brewed at the old Hudepohl brewery on Cincinnati it was cheap and fresh.

When money was not at a premium my next true love in those days was Samuel Smith's Old Brewey Pale Ale.

It was 1996 and I was in Spokane WA. I tried Grant's Scottish Ale and was hooked. I couldn't believe that there was an American alternative to all the macro swill beer that dominated back then.

For me it was Pete's Wicked Ale. Prior to that I drank the usual macro stuff. Someone - and I can't remember who it was - told me to try Pete's and I loved it. I loved it enough to make special trips to the only store in town that sold it, to which I had no other reason to go.
