In the countryside of Franken, you can still fine 2.10 E kellerbiers. So cheap, but agreed sad for the brewery bottom lines.

Fuck, I gotta move to Germany with those prices.

I'm a fan of Newburgh's brown, and like you said, decently priced but, for my money, their cream ale is kinda eh. I would just stick to good ol fashioned Genny cream ale in that situation. Full disclosure, I'd get Bell's best brown over the Newburgh anyway if I had the option.

Your Barrier point is one I wish the brewery would take into consideration. Imposter and Icculous (sp) are both great examples of their respective styles but, at this point, I can see them charging at least $14 a 4-pack in the culture the way it is. Honestly though, and I doubt we'll even have the option because I don't think the brewery will can those beers, I would pay it. At least once on both beers.

I'd pick Barrier's Copernicus and Barnacle over Newburgh's versions any day but Barrier doesn't can them and get them into my local beer distributor. I do prefer Newburgh Cream over Neshaminy Creek's. I'd easily buy tons of their Imposter, Icculus, Simple (any of their low abv, non IPAs) if I could.

The Suarez Palantine Pils - I haven't had it yet - is it an IPL in disguise (that's why its so popular?) or is a pretty traditional?

We ventured out from Bamberg a few times, but I don’t remember seeing any that cheap. Memmelsdorf, the Kellerwald in Forchheim, and St. Georgian Brau’s biergarten in Buttenheim.

Do you have suggestions for the next trip?

Looking forward to trying the Post Shift Pils I hear is coming.
I've been meaning to stop in to the taproom when I drive between NY-BOS, but never have time. I hear they have a draft only Kellerpils?

Yeah, my local distributor stacks DAB high and I keep seeing it fairly fresh... so someone is buying it [in addition to me]. I don't think DAB is hoppy enough for the typical craft drinker, but I doubt that's their target US market. DAB price point is comparable to US domestic "premium" beer and compared to those beers DAB is quite hoppy and unique [but maybe for the US domestic audience that's not a good thing].

I prefer Helles over Pils so I do really like DAB for that reason.

It's not necessarily a more bitter, less bitter situation -- it's the type of bitterness... if that makes sense. There are many IPAs and Pale Ales that don't get to me like a mix of spicy Noble Hops. Even a Euro style beer with some bitterness, but only using one style of hop doesn't effect me either -- it's just an oddness to my palate.
I've only seen it in a mixed 12 pack -- and I didn't want to try a couple of the others in the pack. Have you seen it in its own six-pack? Then again, I see it has that mix of noble hops -- including a couple of the new strains, so I may pass on it.

I don't tend to lump all 'pale' lagers in the same pile myself; and they all have their place. But when I'm in the mood for a Pilsner, it's the hoppy bite that I'm after.

To give a little credit to a place local to my folks - Catskill Ball Lightning Pilsner is really superb. They managed to make one that is simultaneously delicate and hoppy as hell. Not for those who don't enjoy bitter beers, though.

I had the Post Shift Pils and found it to be very interesting - definite white wine/riesling like aroma and flavor. I liked it, but it was certainly unique.

Yea, I know what you are saying about the "type of bitterness" and I have no idea how to articulate that well, but yea, I get it.

I saw it in a stand alone 6-pack the other day. If I see it again Im going to pick it up and give it a try.

I don't know the exact hop bill, but it tasted like a straightforward German pils to me. One of the best American-made ones I've ever had. I had it on tap at Threes about 2 months ago.

Michael, I am in the same boat here! The majority of my Pilsner money goes to PA Pilsners since they meet the quality/freshness/price criteria. Have you seen any Saint Benjamin Pilsner Procim in your area? They are from Philly and one of my new favorites.

A week or so ago I found some fresh Jever (bottled July 2017) and I bought it despite the high price.

    Cheers!

P.S. If I ever see a FW Pivo Pils that is less than 2 months old I buy a 6-pack. This has occurred only twice in the past couple of years; the majority of the time FW beers are not that fresh in my area.

I cant commend on Fatheads because Ive never had it but Id contend that GL and Rhinegeist isnt all that good. Theyre OK but nothing special. If Im at a bar and I have a choice between GL Dort, Rhinegeist Puma and Miller High Life/PBR, Im going High Life/PBR all day.
For me, Dort is too hoppy (I like hoppy but strong hops isnt correct for that style) and Puma is just bland.

Do you know, or are willing to make a guess, on what hops were used in Post Shift Pils?

Is this a beer you would buy another 6-pack of?

    Cheers!

If I was hazarding a guess (and its just a guess) I'd say it had to be hallertau blanc and maybe something else? The only hops I've ever gotten that white wine/riesling aroma/falvors from are hallertau blanc and nelson - and I don't think they're using nelson in this pilsner. The other thing, looking back over my tasting notes, was that it had a bit of a mellon flavor which I often get with hallertau blanc hops.

Would I get another 6-pack? uh, maybe? I will say I wouldn't pick it up if I was in the mood for a classic pilsner. But on its own merit I'd certainly drink it again.

What you are stating there is consistent with descriptions for Huell Melon hops:

    https://bsgcraftbrewing.com/german-huell-melon

Sly Fox made a one-off (rotating?) beer a few months ago they branded as Brewer’s Select Dry Hopped Pils that featured Hallertauer Blanc and Huell Melon hops:

    http://slyfoxbeer.com/beer/brewers-select-dry-hopped-pils

I drank many (8?) pints of that beer over the duration (month+) it was available at the Sly Fox Brewpub. It did indeed have a ‘non-standard’ aroma/flavor to it but I enjoyed drinking that beer. Of my own volition I would not have ‘volunteered’ the term of “melon” to describe that flavor but I could understand why somebody would. My wife absolutely loved this beer!!

It looks like a 6-pack of Jack’s Abby Post Shift Pils is in my future. Vive la différence!!

    Cheers!

    P.S. Go Eagles!!

I've only had it twice, but I really enjoyed it too. While I personally didn't have issues with the hop character, I found the malt character to be what really elevated it.
