Since I won the last lottery BIF from @valrxman, I'll run one sometime in the near future (early next week) so I don't overlap with @mklisz and so beer doesn't sit in a warehouse over the weekend. Stay tuned....

I've done no BA trades, working on some with distant relatives, where I don't need to worry about $4$ or anything else. Don't care about "Whalez", but I'd love to try locals I can't get like CCB, Surly, FFF, New Glarus. What trades or BIFs on that basis from where I am? Wormtown? Jack's Abby? Maine (a bit pricey)? Wachusett Larry? I'm trying to avoid a situation where folks want me to grab Treehouse growlers for them, when I haven't managed to do it for myself yet. I'd love to jump into the Locals BIF if I knew what was expected from MA/RI.

Any of those beers/breweries listed would be great additions to a box in this BIF. I know the box I sent out in round one had beers from Jack's Abby, Nightshift, Cambridge and The Tap, among others.

Here, it's really about sharing great local beers your target doesn't have access to.

Sounds great. How do you know what they can't get (aside from the obvious like JA or Nightshift)? Just an educated guess? Checking wants?

Wants are always a great thing to send. You can check distro maps at www.seekabrew.com.

I always check my target's Want list first and hit as many as I can.

Seekabrew is a good reference, but it isn't 100% accurate. Since this is a "locals" BIF, I try to send good/great beers from small local breweries that don't have a large distribution footprint.

Even though there wasn't a stated minimum rating, I try hard to stay above 85 unless it is a personal favorite that I think is underrated.

The important unwritten rule is to send a box to your target that you would be very happy to have recieved yourself if it was reversed.

Couldn't have said it better myself... hit WANTS, use seekabrew, and send em beers that are as highly rated as you can!

My Round 1 sender was from your area, so I feel uniquely qualified to answer... (not best, just uniquely)
First off, like it or not, Treehouse and Trillium growlers are definitely the aces up your sleeve. Everyone and their brother wants to try these beers, and be it bottles or growlers, your target will love you. Also, if you haven't managed to do it for yourself yet, what better excuse do you need than "for my target"?

Maine Brewing has decent distro, so check seekabrew before loading up on them (although for me, I get them but I never seem to find more than MO or Peeper... I'm dying to try Lunch and Dinner and would love to get more Mean Old Tom)

Jack's Abby and NEBCO get clamored over quite a bit, and don't get out of the area much, so both are probably a good bet.

Also, nothing says your "locals" box has to be full of trade bait, I enjoyed the Backlash and Cape Cod IPAs I got and had never heard of them until I knew who my sender was and started doing my homework on his local options. The most important thing is that they are local beers that you would want to receive yourself (given style preferences of course)

I also don't think anyone will bring out the pitchforks if you take a looser interpretation of "local" and include some gems from VT

    oh yeah, and Wants.

    ^^This and this^
Plus, I'm sure most of you have breweries around you that don't even have distribution, they only sell beer out of their facility. This is as local as it gets and pretty easy to assume nobody outside of 50 miles is going have an easy opportunity to try those beers. Because some of these beers may only have a handful of ratings because they are so small, I do like @rspauldi and go with personal favorites I feel are underrated or simply reviewed by BMC fans who know nothing about good beer.

This is great info. I think I'd definitely like in on the next round. We've certainly got plenty of good local brews here. I can get Lunch quite easily (anything but Dinner really) and JA, Wormtown for sure. Slumbrew makes some good stuff, Pretty Things etc. I have good access to VT too, with a house there, so I'm happy to call it semi-local (though getting HF and Lawson's is very difficult even still). I'll get to Trillium and Treehouse eventually. Have no room for growlers at the moment, though I may buy a new refrigerator this weekend (tax free weekend) and put the old one in the garage.

Just enjoyed The Tempress last night and blew my socks off. Another beer that did not disappoint from @EA728

Man, that seems like a lot of trouble. Just go to your local bottle shop and grab whatever is on the clearance shelf. Doesn't get more local than that.
