I do have something for you and this just reminded me of that fact. Man you might have broke down and cried if I didn't bring that along with me tonight, it's a thing of beauty for sure.

@PA-Michigander, @ninjembro per twitter the BA SSU will be on when they open at 11 today. Stupid work, now I get to sit here all day and think about how good it might be.

    This.

LOL - I did a really simple trade with Chad years ago - way before the Locals and obviously before it was world wide knowledge that he brewed whales.:stuck_out_tongue:

They had 8 barrels sitting back in the back, assuming they are all being used now that's a lot of beer.

Hello locals, I'm Jeremy. Long time beer lover, fairly new to craft beer, I caught the bug in spring and its been a pain in my wallet. Been lurking around this thread and thought I would finally introduce myself to ba. Seems like a real close community! I am also a pa boy, 717 more specific, and will also be at als in a hot minute to grab some crowlers of ba ssu.

Hey Jeremy, thanks for stopping by. I would agree, we are a very tight-knit, positive trading community. I'm sure some of our PA members will also be at Al's today for similar reasons. What's your trading background look like?

Hey Jeremy welcome, best thing to do is to hang out for a bit and kind of see how stuff works. Offering a LIF is the typical way of getting started here. We definitely encourage new members but just want to make sure you're committed. Cheers!

@Weissie it seems from your post that you're not just new to BIF or new to trading, but new to beer (as we know it) as a whole. Beer Advocate as a whole site is a very large community with a very diverse user base that are into many different things, there's the Beer Talk forum for chatting about beer in general, and there's the Regional boards for talking about beer specific to your own area, those are probably great places for newcomers to the site to start.

It was my experience at least that getting started with "beer" gave me a TON to do just within my own local area before I even THOUGHT about trading, let alone BIF. Personally I would recommend that approach, since it is much less costly to drink beer available at your own grocery store than to have it shipped halfway across the country. Once you're comfortable with the costs associated with higher-end beer drinking/chasing, probably around the time you've experienced most of what your own area has to offer, then you'll want to do some local-for-local beer trades, to experience what other areas have to offer that yours does not.

This is where the Beer Trading forums come into play. ISO:FT is for setting up direct one-on-one trades with someone, and an easy starter post there would go like "ISO Locals FT PA Locals" and in your post you'd say something like "I'm looking to experience some non-PA locals such as Pipeworks, Cigar City, and New Glarus, I can offer crowlers from Pizza Boy and other local PA options, looking to stay $4$" and you'll get a ton of people that would like to try Pizza Boy beers just like you would want to try beer from Pipeworks or New Glarus (trust me, you do). $4$ means you want to send and receive beer that totals the same purchase price, the alternative being "value trading" where one bottle that was bought for $15 might trade for $100 worth of other beer. Staying $4$ eliminates the perception that you might be 'auctioning' off your beer (which is against the rules) and by using the words "local beer" and specifying which breweries you want to try, you're setting a specific expectation.

Some people will probably contact you with offers for other beer not mentioned in your post, and feel free to make that trade too. Just be careful you don't set up too many trades at a time, especially at first; between the beer you buy (let's say $80 worth, enough to be worth shipping but not an exorbitant amount) and the cost of packing materials (bubble wrap, shipping container, etc), and the cost to ship the beer by FedEx or UPS, you're now at $120. If you take on 5 trades at once (easy to do when you get exciting offers for cool beers you've never heard of let alone tried) now you've just committed to spending $600 in a week.

The other side of beer trading is where you've found yourself today, the BIF section, or "Beer it Forward". Beer it Forward is, in (very) short a Secret Santa group, with beer. Any BIF group you see will involve people sending beer to someone and receiving beer from someone, that they did not directly reciprocate (distinguishing it from a one-on-one trade). The format of how it is determined who sends to whom varies depending on the thread. In this thread (and SWTFYW), we've moved beyond a simple Secret Santa concept, and now just send beer to each other for a variety of reasons and on a pretty constant basis. This is the "deep end of the pool" so to speak, and the people in this group are all certifiably insane. Stay far, far away from us. Oh, and welcome.

This guy is ok by me. We met and upon shaking hands we MUTUALLY knocked over my half full BA SSU. He took it upon himself and bought me a new full pour.

It's damn near perfect IMO. Noticeable bourbon and still tons of coffee. I gave it a five but may be a 4.75

I've got 12 Crowlers coming home with me. I did see one guy take 24 out so I don't feel 'that bad'.
