State Line is the same way, it's what drew me into beer from bourbon. For $25 I could try one bourbon or over a dozen different beers? Sign me up.

This was my first mixer sixer when getting into craft this earlier year. Good Beer does 10% off of mixer sixers. Currently have too many beers to drink, but I'll probably be back soon to make myself another mixer sixer.

Yeah, I can see right through their plan. Always trying to sell me 6. I always buy 7 just to show them who's boss.

Lol, at the BevMo I go to, they frown on taking singles from the cold section(where all the freshest beer is stored). They watch me like a hawk as it is because I am always stalking (and stocking ) their shelves. So I just swap 'em out and feel that slight twinge of remorse, but mostly I feel the hate for that awful, incompetent store's business practices and overall quality of employee.

It wasn't until I read this thread that I realized I haven't bought a mix-a-six in years. I have options to make them all around me, but I have no interest to do so. I used to do it a good bit. I guess now I am just more interested in sixers.

Many stores around me offer the mix-a-six option, some with 10% discount. I love this option, as it gives me more of an opportunity to try beers I would not try otherwise (such as buying a six of some style I know nothing about).

Some states (like Kansas and Missouri) have liquor laws that prohibit purchasing individual 12 oz bottles that are only offered in a 4/6-pack normally. The bottle shop I go to has a case with three doors of singles--the first two doors are all beers that typically only come in packs, and the third consists of the import and other single-size beers that are sold that way ordinarily. You can buy the beers out of the third door in any quantity, but out of the first two doors, it's groupings of 4 and 6 only.

As far as I'm aware, there are no bottle discounts offered at any of the liquor stores around here that do mix-pack offerings. In fact, I'm convinced that at some places, there is actually a markup, since they have a flat rate like 8.99 for a mixer sixer, but there are beers in the cases that don't work out to $1.50/beer. I tend to stay away from those places and get my singles at the local bottle shop.

I didn't mean just mix six packs, I meant singles in general. There are times I only buy two or three 12oz beers, I was just saying it is nice having the option of not committing to a 4/6 pack of an unknown. But even if I've had a beer before I sometimes get the craving for just one a year, like Devil Dancer..and it is nice to just be able to pick one up.

I wish this were an option for me. Sometimes I see a beer in the singles section that I want to try, but I'm not really looking to add another six beers to my already overly-excessive beer collection at home.

Yeah, that sucks. What a stupid law.

Love the mixed six pack/single beer options. The downside as others have suggested is getting out-of-date beers. I check dates on bottles like crazy and have seen some doozies (beers a year or more past their bottled on or even best by date), but mostly I find them to be within reason. If the bottle happens to be one without a date, I'll usually stay away unless it's a current seasonal, something dark with a high ABV, or I'll just take a guess based on accumulated dust.

Often now I'm buying a regular six pack or two and a couple or three single beers. If I go to a place in a different state, I'll do the mixed six (or two) to pick up beers I can't get back home.

I hate having to check the dates on each bottle so if I get a mix a 6 and at least 3 beers arent "old" then I consider it a successful venture. .500 batting average :grinning:

I almost exclusively buy the mix pack. Total wine sells pretty much everything as a single. I've had them pull from a six pack for me if I didn't find my heart's desire as a single. 2 each of whatever strikes my fancy. I only buy six packs of something I know I like and then only when there's an occassion to share.

I noticed some stores specialize in singles (e.g., Maximum Beverage, WHartford, CA; Julio's, Westborough, MA). I've seen a few give a 15% discount on mixed packs (must be 6) or, if they don't sell singles, on 6 bombers. With bombers, of course, it's a great deal, as they are almost never discounted. But even with the discount, the mixed six is still more expensive than a straight one--most singles are marked up at least 30-40%, so a 15% snap-back does not make up for the difference. Still, it's good for sampling. I'd encourage stores to do more of it. No one is asking them to split 30-packs of adjuncts.

Variety is the spice of life. The Mix Six is a prime example of this.

Yep. I went to a beer store in Chicago over the weekend and while they had a section, it had a below average selection of beers that I can get here. I could have gotten 6 Mix a Sixes. Instead, I just got 2 sixers, a 4 pack, and three bombers.

That mix a six is a perfect entrance into craft beer. Six really awesome beers.

Mix a six was pretty much all I bought until quite recently. Now it's an even mix of 6-packs and mix-a-six. Still like to try new stuff, but my go to beers, I've gotta have.

The weiss's market in town has a mix-a-six section for $10.95, but includes so much dross (adjuncts, malt mixes) I struggle to find 6. Do have a reasonable 6-pack section though. Mari's in Reading PA is my usual stop, huge selection, always changing. Good ta go in Chambersburg, PA has a much smaller section, but recently it seems most of the beers I'd like to try are singles not in the mix-a-six, and the prices can be scary.

I would say it's a bit IPA heavy. It could probably do with just the Union Jack and then probably a porter, brown ale, and a dubbel/tripel.

But yeah, I just jumped on a bunch of IPAs because I think that's what beginners usually gravitate immediately towards. Not saying I'm still not a hophead...

When I lived in FL, the local distributor offered a huge array of single beers to try. We loved going in, selecting our 6 to testing out new brews. The stores around me in PA have just adopted the mix six theory, but what I've found is that the beer is skunked! Has anyone else had the same issue?
