The higher pricing and likelihood of finding older beer in the mix-six setups normally means I skip over them. However, I love it when stores essentially make everything priced per bottle, and do so without extra markup (like Siciliano's in Grand Rapids)

I'm a little more edumacated now so I don't find the need to do it as much and I will usually buy a sixer of a style I really like (IPA)on blind faith but I still do it occasionally when I see something that intrigues me and even a beer that's a little old gives me a good idea of whether it's something I'd want to buy again.

I should also add that I Mix-a-Six so often (I basically always buy singles) that I've had the vast majority of the 12oz singles at my beer store.

WELP! Time to move on to bombers.

trader joes sells all their beer singles. they devide the cost of the sizer and that's what they charge so it's fair.

where i buy my beer they have a designated mix six section. it rotates on what beers they offer, but i still occasionally do a mix six when there's a selection of beers i'd like to try. i usually get 2 of each brand in my mix six to get a good sample of the beer. i like it, but do try to watch expiration dates, if no date, then i won't buy them. sometimes they are sly and cover the expiration date with a price sticker, won't buy those either. cost is 8.99.

As mentioned earlier I avoid a lot of mix a six sections because it's the old beer graveyard. That being said I keep my eyes open for new additions of beers I've wanted to try. With all the new breweries popping up a lot more fresh beer is in that cooler these days.

Always check bottle dates if applicable, especially on mixed packs. Beer Buyers or Store managers will often place old beer into singles departments in order to move them faster :slight_frown:

Haven't done a mix a six, mostly because I am cheap. However some guys at work get together and each buy a case of beer, then we trade. 6 people buy 6 cases, and each person ends up with 4 of each. Kind of mix a six on a larger scale, and you end up trying something you wouldn't normally buy. Cases are just so much cheaper per bottle in PA that this works pretty well.

I buy beers I like, so the notion of having 3 or 5 more of them excites me.

Zero appreciation, but then again I have no beer goals. I'm way too cool for that shit

So, it was you........bastard......you evil bastard.....

Seriously though, I've done that a couple times. I really don't do it though unless I have no other option and its something I really want to try. But then when I go to buy a six pack of something I really like, and there only one left, and I go to grab it and realize that there's one missing (and this has happened on a couple occasions) it makes me realize for a moment how cruel and ironic life can be.....and then I grab something else and leave with a smile

mix your own six pack is good if you want to try 6 specific individual beers you've wanted to have (in my opinion), other than that you might get stuck with 1-6 beers you didn't like ha, also this is just me i'll try any beer once, or sometimes you just wanna have one beer, so non the less its good that some stores have this option.

It also depends (I feel) on the selection they offer, and if you personally think its worth it. And yes buying singles is good too because, going back to the same thing, you might get stuck with a 4-6pack that you didn't like

Yep, same here. I should have known that 9.99 mix a 6er with options like 3 philosophers, hennepin, & rare voz were going to end up being skunked. Sucks cuz it was my first time trying Ommegang beers and was looking forward to it.

I don't know if this is only in Austin... but Whole Foods allows you to break any 6-pack to buy a single even if it's not in the singles section. You just pick one bottle out of the six pack and put the rest on a little cart in the beer section. The leftovers get put onto the singles rack. I do that a lot to try beer I'm uncertain I'd like (I got a single of Rubaeus yesterday, as a matter of fact). It's generally $0.50 more per beer doing it that way rather than buying a six/four-pack.

Back in the day when I was first getting into beer, there was a beer/liquor store near me with a vast selection and they offered the same deal with 10% off a full six-pack. I got to try a LOT of craft beer fast that way. It seemed pretty popular, so stuff didn't linger... and they had pretty much anything in the store in the singles section. Of course, that selection seems pitiful nowadays.

Surprisingly in Kansas you can do a mix-6 and the nice thing is you can also just grab a single, two, or three, etc. If you get the full 6 though you get a 10% discount and that makes up for the small mark-up they make on the single bottles. They also let you break up six-packs here for a single if you can't find it in the single coolers. However in Missouri, just 45 minutes from where I live, a lot of place have mix-6 but I believe you have to get the full 6. If you're ever passing through Lawrence, KS and want to try some midwest brews stop by Cork and Barrel, they have ten cooler doors of just singles so no skunky beers and you can pick out exactly what you want. I've only been into the craft beer scene the past year and I've loved going to the shop and being able to try different styles or whatever catches my eye without having to commit to the full six-pack.

if I couldn't buy singles I'd hardly ever try new stuff outside of the bar where I can get a sample glass first. I've been burned once too many times and been stuck with 3 (or 5) bottles of something I really don't want to drink. Singles sections, and mix-six discounts, are fantastic.

    I wouldn't be where I am today beer-wise without singles/mixed 6 packs.

I love to make a mix six from one of the store I go to. The guy will bust open any 6 pack in the store for me and allow me to grab 1 or 2 from and put the rest in the mix six beer fridge. So if something New comes in, he will let me grab 2 out of it before it even hit mix six fridge. He just won't pop open the 4 packs.

In Massachusetts, it is difficult to find stores that do mix sixers and/or single pricing (at least in my area).

I recently found two stores, one in Nashua, NH and one in Billerica, MA that have practically everything in the store available in singles, for a reasonable surcharge.

Needless to say, I haven't been back to my old stores since the discoveries.
