Yeah but Summit brews the beer, so who's the REAL hero? :stuck_out_tongue:

I would argue that, while a good deed is a good deed, the motive is what qualifies it as marketing or altruism.

Then it's not "altruistic," is it? :grinning:

It's a good thing, benefiting many others, but that's not what the OP is asking. There's an episode of Friends where they're discussing unselfish good deeds. And they have trouble thinking of one truly unselfish good deed.

And "no" I don't know if I can consider any business altruistic. Some are more decent and more charitable than others.

I've never seen that episode, but if you think about it, it is kinda true..even for the smallest of deeds.. No business is purely altruistic..the most granola of companies needs to make money. Even for those who donate money without ever saying a word, they'll still write if off on their taxes so there's still personal gain.

As you said, it's not a black and white world..so just shop those that are better than others if you can!

While 9:30AM and at work may be too early for a beer...I can still think about it. Have a good weekend!

    If it's truly altruistic, it's not a company or a business, it's a non-profit organization.

Human society is built upon the concept of reciprocity.

DFH around here. They always donated to our mountain biking festivals. They also do a lot of other things. Of course they do have the resources to be kind.

    Must be the Trappist breweries.

Some of them use their profits for projects in under-developed countries, others to pay for the costs of their monastery. Praying for the the well being of mankind can be seen as a form of altruism and giving back I think. Although I'm not a religious person myself.

Too bad that some of the best brewers in the world have to stop producing beer because of their religious obligations. But on the other hand, maybe this a good thing and in some way reflected in the beer.

Sixpoint does ... about all I'm having to pay for this haul is reviewing their beer here on BA.com, which I would've done had I paid for these beers anyway (and I might've paid double to finally get some Jammer, so thanks Sixpoint!):

As for altruism, that's a tough one for a single human being much less a business or coorporation. Here in Texas, Lone Pint, Martin House and Jester King definitely feel like places where the beer matters more than the money. New Republic in my home town also has that feel.

I have run a charity beer festival for 10 years where the proceeds go to our local community center that to be brief essential is the life blood of my town and the less fortunate that live in it. over that 10 year spand over 300 breweries have completely donated beer to support the cause. in my state you submit them a 501c3 form which allows for a tax right off and they send a rep from the brewery to pour. In MA you can sell wine, beer, liquor, and food all in the same building so we try to raise money with these kinds of events using each department, beer is far and away the most charitable industry in our field.

Many breweries give spent grain to farms for livestock. I'm sure the animals like it and I know the farmers appreciate it.

For sure. I wasn't posting it as an example of altruism, just as an example of breweries giving away free stuff. And it was free ... there's no binding contract involved here where I have to send back the regurgitated beer if I don't give Jammer a great review.

Since I started in 2004 Harpoon donates beer for our arrival party during my yearly MS 150 bike ride. Their IPA and UFO are perfect for post-ride pounding, any less sessionable and people would be passing out early!
