I don't know - in my files I've got many articles dating back to Repeal which discuss the topic of proper pouring and beer clean glasses printed in "general interest" newspapers and magazines or brewery handouts. Sure, some of the newspaper articles may have originated with brewers' marketing departments but the publications still printed them. "Snips" from several such articles:

One thing I see often, even from some of my favorite drinking buddies, is they insist on pouring the entire can/bottle on the side of the glass to ensure that they end up with legit no head at all. Like their goal is to create zero head. No bueno.

I think the difference then to now (in my opinion) is a matter of the times, which changes familiarity due to exposure. Times are different. One of the big ones now is consider how much beer was consumed at establishments vs. today, and of course the opposite - how much was consumed at home vs. today.

One of the coolest pours I've seen is the bottom fill.
It blew my mind the first time I saw it.
I thought I was having a flashback or it was some kind of magic trick.
The systems are very pricey, but they give you a perfect beer. No waste.

Nothing worse than getting a beer poured into a glass that has just run through the dish machine at an establishment. Didn't happen often, but it sux when it does.
Luckily in Pa, it is law that beer lines must be cleaned on a weekly biweekly basis.
