For years, Guinness was my go-to, all-occasion beer. I still love it and have it far too rarely.

You guys just like it because it's Madonna's favorite. I'm onto you.

Maybe Timothy Taylor could use an ad campaign with the word “Vogue” in it!?!

    Cheers!

IMHO, and as I become older and...wiser? I have come to realize that there isn't necessarily a quintessential beer. Maybe there is a good standard for the style, but then, really, what does a style guidline do for the average drinker?
I recently had Event Horizon, very sought after, very highly rated. I did not care for the beer at all. Way too much of everything for me.
I think perhaps the great thing about craft beer, and particularly the ever growing options, is that there is a beer for every taste. Taste is so variable, genetics, gender, situation, maybe even mood has an impact.
Don't worry about the stats, enjoy the options!

Supposedly. She's a tastemaker with some taste.
I see through your ruse. I know you put Madonna before Maiden.

When I think of "beer", the style that comes to mind is almost always an Amber Ale. The only way I can really describe one off the top of my head is "it tastes like beer". I think it's because they are generally a balanced and familiar style.

This is a tough question because so many different people really enjoy different styles. For me its a pale ale, or "the everyday beer", ie, I could drink it at night, at a tailgate, after mowing the lawn and super sweaty and hot, at lunch, at happy hour, on draft, in a can, while fishing, etc--ALL of these times. It has to have that "any time is fine" quality. My current go-to beer for this is actually Cigar City's Invasion Pale Ale.

I have to say it, even though I am completely ashamed of myself - beauty is in the eye of the Beerholder.

Shuddering aside, it's got to be a Belgian Strong Dark Ale.

pilseners ... because of the true detectable mix of malt and hops and generally sessionable ABV

Belgian dubbels and quads earn honorable mention because everytime I drink one I can't help but think "Beer!"

Samuel Smith's Organic Lager is my go to answer to what 'beer' tastes like.

I would have to go with British Bitter. It was the first different beer I really enjoyed and it completely opened my horizons as a beer drinker - Double Diamond, Flowers Original Bitter, those are "quintessential" beers for me.
