I tried a bottle last year and loved it, but the one I had over the weekend just blew me away. I bought a six of Bigfoot a few days ago and it's fantastic, but that Old Ruffian topped it. I plan on buying a couple more bottles tomorrow.

Is there any way this stuff gets even better with age?

Possibly. For me, its really the only style I consider aging (if at first it's less appealing than I had hoped for). I know folks who will hold on the barleywines for many years. I think one year does the trick if the beer is either too hot or too hopped out.

I am under the impression that this beer is no longer brewed. Did you have it via bottle or draft? Certain of the date?

For your palate it might. But I've had Old Ruffian once (~1 year old), and Bigfoot both fresh and aged (1-4 years), and the only one I really enjoyed was the fresh Bigfoot. To my palate, hoppy beers of greater strength just become malty, medicinal-tasting messes with age.

2016 was the last year, I thought.

I know that's the last year I was able to get any from my distributor. So I believe you are correct.

Yeah, I had BA old Ruffian last year, which I assume was the 2016 version aged for a year. Damn shame they stopped making it.

Yep discontinued. At least they’re still making hibernation ale.
