Rogue does make some very nice beers and seems to get an undue amount of hate, but let's please not use the words Dead Guy and Maibock in the same sentence any more . Taken on its own terms it's good stuff, and leave it at that.

I have not tried it again. I generally don't with drain pours. I don't think it was an expectation thing...I can see that leading to disappointment...but I highly doubt it would lead to something so nasty you simply can't drink it.

It's worth noting that the four beers I mentioned all have the exact same flavor profile. I'm convinced there's something present that is foul to a very small percentage of people. Given the popularity of the beer, I don't expect many people to be in agreement with me.

If someone gives me one someday, I'll try it again, but I won't be buying it.

I've had a few of Rogues offerings and I get what you're saying. They weren't drain pours for me, but I never bought them again and buy nothing from Rogue now.

Can't speak for other areas but that's true in mine. One local store has Dead Guy bombers on the shelf that have been there for a year. Even the price stickers have turned darker with age. The rep knows (I told him) but on the rack they remain.

I thought the recent discussions regarding so-called "supertasters" were quite interesting. Maybe it has something to do with that (although a lot of the supertaster discussion centered around perception of bitterness).

I have a Rogue lined up for New Beer Sunday. The ingredient list includes 9 different malts, plus flaked rye, honey, and fruit juice. I'm not terribly adept at picking out and describing flavors, but I'll be looking for some of the things you mention in the OP.

I wonder why not an ounce of discussion or speculation (or a single character in the thread title) is about Ska or Pelican?

Have you had Troegs Cultivator? That's pretty much got classic Maibock flavor and aroma.

Agree. I've gotten a case every year since they first released it because of that and because I enjoy it so much. Also I've found that it survives reasonably well even if I spread out drinking the case to the point where the last couple of bottles are beyond their best by date. (I don't recommend doing that on purpose, but they don't become a total loss either. :-))

Will try and thx for rec. NC just started getting Troegs in the last year or so. I previously relied on friends bringing back from NE so spotty in past. Although not a fresh/wet hop--I enjoyed the Hopknife "harvest ale" last September/Oct-12 pack of cans on the beach goes nice with a hot day.
