On certain drinking and tasting sessions, I have noticed an interesting effect when I try any beers after a saison. Specifically, the funky farmhouse taste of the saison somehow applies itself to every beer after, even and including the crispest lager. While these qualities in the farmhouse ale itself are good, I find it intrusive for anything afterward and inhibits an effective judgment and enjoyment of beers tried after. It’s almost as though saison turns other beers into saison as well!

Has anyone else noticed this, and why/how does it happen?

The only thing I can think of is that some saisons (Boulevard Tank 7 is a perfect example of this) can have a "soapy" finish (not a bad finish for that particular brew) that can coat the tongue. Maybe that soapy flavor is carrying over.

Hmmm can't say I've had this happen to me. Maybe you're really sensitive to that flavor? The same way some people are sensitive to cilantro or something, and that flavor dominates the whole dish they're eating?

Putting some thought into it, I suppose that it could be musty earthy European hops that shift my palette towards that taste. Jumping from a saison to a German Pilsner seems to shift off the maltiness towards the mustiness of the hops. At least that’s my hypothesis. This seems to have happened moving off a Saison DuPont to Weihenstephaner Pilsner.

I can’t rule out residual yeastiness, however.

Carryover flavors should always be a concern when going from beer to beer, it's just that in this case you're probably noticing it more than at other times.

Do you rinse your glass out or change glasses? That could do it if its funky/sour saison anyway.

I've always thought it would be more noticeable with "big" styles, imperial stouts, IPAs. That's why its recommended not starting with those and going with more mild/light beers.

I'm guessing something with a very distinct and noticeable flavor would be more noticeable, like some Belgians.

It's the phenols that always seem to have more 'disruptive' qualities to me, even in a lower gravity beer- that would be stuff like spices (peppery, clovey...), or even into the medicinal/plastic range. It'll take more than a sip or two of water to clear that kind of thing from your palate. So, yeah, in a broad sense you'll get them more in Belgian styles.

Cleanse your palate with a Miller High Life and after that everything will taste better.

Not haven’t, I’ve sampled some of their other beers, but I didn’t really care for them, it’s more my wife’s style. I don’t remember the name of those though. I’ve tried some of the Haw River Saisons, but they’re not really my thing.

Funky is one of those 'stinky' flavors [something like skunk odor lasting in your nose (the real kind of skunk)] that I can't get out of my mouth for hours regardless of what I do.

I've always felt that a nice strong sour/wild will definitely "cleanse" my palate

Yes, at least for me this is a thing. Drinking water between beers is not only a good habit as it will rehydrate you and somewhat clean your palate. Also bread/crackers go a long way in aiding with the same. I find this mainly with belgians, saisons and wild ales.
