calling @jesskidden http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/...m-of-american-history-hiring-a-beer-historian Sounds like an interesting job...
Ha, I JUST read about this on Thrillist and thought the same thing....perfect for @jesskidden. I'm sure @patto1ro would do a bang up job as well.
What an awesome gig if it works for your salary requirements. Especially the travel requirements. Beercationing and writing reviews while getting paid to do it?
@jesskidden needs three references. There's already over three in this thread. The problem is that "meeting deadlines" is a requirement. That means that we'll no longer see jesskidden on this website.
The position was probably made specifically for @jesskidden and publicly listing the "opening" is merely a bureaucratic formality.
Thanks for highlights the salary aspect which is at the very end of the article (copied below). Yup, that is indeed a modest salary considering the location (Washington DC). Maybe that is the 'going rate' for historians? Cheers! "Historian / Scholar American Brewing History Initiative IS-11 ($64,650 plus benefits)"
I saw this a few weeks ago. The deadline was August 10th. If I still lived on the East Coast I would have applied for it. I am just at a different point in my life currently that a relocation wouldn't be feasible at this time. Not only do I have the passion for craft beer and research, but also the qualifications of an MA in History with physical and digital archival experience. 64k isn't bad given most people opt for a tenure track position out of graduate school and are lucky to get 2/3 of that if the can find a position (most opt to adjunct for next to nothing). For this position, I would have negotiated an option to work remotely part of the year (as many potential interview subjects live in California) while staying in the DC during the other portion.
Ideally, The Smithsonian gig would be a second job. Whoever assumes the task ought to consider developing a Beer History Beer Truck- like current food trucks- and brew historical beers on the road in the wild west of D.C. ABC laws. He could upfit the beast with a "sleeper" and find historically friendly parking lots at night........
