Is this brewery underrated? I see them mentioned every once in a while but I don't think they get enough credit.

Saturday night I had their Choklat and it was one of the most delicious beers I've ever had. Then I started thinking about all the other offerings I've had from them that were great.

So I wanted to make this thread to see what you guys/gals thought.

blah, chokolat. that beer is so one dimensional and overrated. smell and taste are nothing but chocolate. if u poured that into a martini glass and told your wife it was a chocotini, she wouldnt knoiw the difference.

that being said, their iniquity was great. overall, just an ok brewery

Blackwater series is great. Creme Brulee, Choklat and Mokah. Jahva and Oat I could live without.

I never buy their other stuff.

Agreed, except I do buy Jahva. Oat doesn't do anything for me. All their other stuff I had when I first started getting into craft beer but don't even bother with them anymore. Every once in a while I'll grab one of their 12 oz to try. Nothing bad, but nothing phenomenal.

I think of ST as more of a novelty brewer. I love a few of their beers (Choklat, Pumking) but they are not everyday drinking beers and more like specialty beers. Some of their everyday stuff bores me (Phin & Matts, IPA, Pale Ale) but the recent addition of 2XIPA is the first everyday beer that I really, really like. Unearthly, Back Burner and Inequity are all to sweet for me. Gemini is pretty good, but nothing more than that. The rest of their stuff I could just leave and some were horrid (Cherry Saison, Raspberry Porter).

So in summation, they make a few great beers, lots of average to below average beer and way too many "Imperial" beers. Imperial Pale Lager? Really?

Their high gravity beers are very sweet, intense, and polarizing. Pumking is hands down my favorite from Southern Tier and easily one of my favorite beers period..

I think that says more about your wife's taste (or lack there of) than the beer itself.

I hate it when my beers named Choklat taste like Chocolate.

I know right? and 'Creme Brulee' is sweet, what's up with that?
They have a rating of exceptional and I agree. The Oak Aged Unearthly is great. I also love that they are highly accessible. I don't have to drive to the brewery in the hopes of getting some one off.

    Southern Tier sucks.

(read: please stop pimping them so I don't have to fight others for the Blackwater seasonals!)

They are my favorite brewery. If I could only drink beer from one brewery it would certainly be them and if I could only choose one beer for the rest of my life it would be Pumking all the way!!!!!! The more BA's who are ambivalent about them the better....more for me.

Southern Tier is like Jekyll and Hyde, their bombers of specialty beers are great, but their 12 oz. beers leave alot to be desired.

A lot of the stuff that gets talked about (the bombers, for the most part) is not really my style, but they do make some very good beers that I am happy to buy regularly (and, for me, that's where the rubber meets the road). Barely a month goes by where I don't have either 2XIPA, 2XStout or even the regular IPA in the fridge. The right beer at the right price, and usually darn fresh- that's certainly something to appreciate.

My favorite pumpkin beer. It's over-the-top and in-your-face awesomeness.

Choklat is amazing. Pumking, Mokah, Jahva, and Oat are very good. 2XIPA, 2X Stout, Hop Sun, Unearthly, and Creme Brulee are not bad at all. Backburner and Raspberry Wheat are mediocre. Old Man and Eurotrash Pilz leave a lot to be desired.

Overall, a 'decent' brewery. However, I must say, their label art sucks ass.

EDIT: I forgot about Harvest. I do likes me dat der beer.

I agree, their sixers are pretty forgettable besides 2XIPA, Harvest Ale, and Old Man.

I have to be honest, and just throw my 2ยข in on this: I really used to love Southern Tier, and while it was mostly for their 2XIPA, which I will still order from time too time, they are a major problem across all of their beers, which is sweetness. From Unearthly, to Backburner, to the entire Black Water series, I've found all of them to be intensely sugary, so much so that Wilford Brimley is currently filming PSAs about it. I see them sitting on shelves and can no longer bring myself to buy them, because there is so much better out there.

Also, their 6-packs are pretty meh. Phin & Matt? Come on....

If anybody wants them though, I can trade any of them that are on the shelf $4$, so hit me up.
