I picked up some Bissell Brothers The Substance today. It was canned yesterday. I have enjoyed every batch I've had of this beer, but this batch seems off to me. Very malty. Little to no hop presence. Nose is mute. I am a fan of this brewery but wanted to ask the community if others are feeling the same about the 6/4 batch. Cheers.

I just bought a 4-pack yesterday as well. I thought it was incredible. I haven't had it in a few months so I can't really compare it to the past batches, but from what I remember it was as good as ever.

Ya, this batch is legit IMO.

Just cracked a can from the new batch. Amazing as always. Super aromatic and juicy. Maybe it was something you ate or drank beforehand that screwed with your palate? It's happened to me before.

I think @Davel22 may be right and my palate was off. The rest of the 4-pack was fine. My apologies. Mods please nuke this thread. Cheers.

This is the best batch so far, haven't missed a drop since they began selling. By far the best. I try not to eat mints or anything like that before drinking, that always effs up my palate.

Off batch? Probably. It's a brand new start-up. Probably still working some kinks. I wasn't particularly impressed with the last one I had on draft. Was much more into batches from this spring. Cheers

Literally watched them can the two 4-Packs I bought on 6/4. Great batch in my opinion.

I just visited them this past weekend. I thought that the Substance and Substance w/ Saison yeast were phenomenal. However there were no cans to be had. At some point, I'd like to go back to the brewery and get some cans, but I'm not sure what to expect. Do they sell out of cans quickly? Are they only sold by the case at the brewery?

Yeah, I took a 4 pack canned on 6/4 up to the DMB show in Bangor last weekend, and it tasted just fine to me.

They can The Substance about every 2-3 weeks (website might say something like "every 16-17 days") - The stores and brewery both sell out FAST... You'll want to be on top of planning a trip when they announce a canning day, and/or reserve some at Bier Cellar (Portland) or Tully's (Wells), etc when they announce receiving a shipment. Good Luck.

I believe at this time the brewery sales are still By the Case Only. Not sure if/when that'll change.

I bought a 4 pack at the brewery last batch so it doesn't have to be a full case. Also, Tully's will let you pay over the phone so you won't need to rush to pick it up.

Thanks for the advice! Is getting there at noon sufficient, or do people typically show up well in advance?

You can hold it at Bier Cellar as well; just sign up for their email and they'll send out an email the day before or day of and you can pay for it online and pick up later.

That's good to know. I wonder how long they will hold it for you. I imagine not long.

When I was up there at the end of April, you could hold two 4-packs for pickup without a credit card (not sure if it was just for the day or until the next day, they came in on a Saturday). Alternatively, you could pay for the beer online to pickup later, in which case the limit was raised to a case. Not sure how that affects how long you have to pick it up though. I'd give them a call, they were really helpful when I called and told me how to sign up for the email, etc.

The hype surrounding this beer is not substantive.

Any stores a better shot at finding their beer. Will be up next week but will miss the brewery open days...

All stores sell out the day they get their shipment. They probably won't can another batch for another week or two. Your best bet is just keep checking their FB.
