In the B.C. [before craft] era and in many places still, the beer selection consisted of BMC, Amstel Light, Heineken, etc. Now that bars and restaurants are beginning to see the light of the oncoming train, many have added craft selections to their beer offerings. However, what I am seeing in non-beercentric places beside the addition of Shock top and Blue Moon, are again, usual suspects such as Sam Adams Lager, SNPA & DFH 60 minute, with a smattering of local brews and rounded out with nationally obtainable beers - especially in chain places. Personally, if I go someplace once a week, I'd like to see at least half of the selection turn over if there are 16 or fewer taps. If there are more than 16 taps, I'd still lilke to see 8 of them turn over weekly. That way I know that the beer is fresh, etc. If they have the same beer all the time, how do I know that it's a fresh keg or one from weeks ago.

But it's the usual suspects angle that I am interested in having other opinions about. How many of you out there are seeing the same type of thing?

Here in Ithaca we love our beer and a variety of pubs and restaurants will feature our local beer. Turnover is not something I worry about because I am not out to drink that frequently. I will say that if the beer taps have nothing I want I am very content with a good wine selection. Now that I have tried more than a few beers I will say that a nice offering from dogfish head even if I have had that before is preferable to anything BMC. So it's relative in it's importance. But, the food is why I am at a restaurant so if the establishment takes it's cuisine seriously you will see both good wine, and good beer.

My problem is that I don't like wine at all and since I've been into craft beer, liquor isn't as palatable for me. And yes, food is the reason to go to a restaurant but personally when there's also good beer, it adds to the overall experience.

Unless a restaurant or bar specifically advertises that they are a craft-beer destination, I hold out no hope that I will be able to get anything but a Boston Lager. Here in CA, we get a LOT of Stone distribution in places you wouldn't expect, so I can generally get a decent IPA, but tap turnover? No chance. Many of the bars I've been to have too many regulars that will raise hell if they come in and can't get their Stella Artois in a pitcher with the plastic ice-core to keep it cold (and remove 1 glass from the pitcher, increasing profit margins).

I was in S.D. in October and couldn't believe how many restaurants actually have a craft beer selection. But then again, when you're in San Diego, you should be able to get a decent beer anywhere you go.

OK, maybe 8 a week is too many. But for the prices some places get, they can use 1/6 kegs, still make money and turn at least 4 to 6 over weekly. Especially if they sell growlers.

good luck, I know my local euro street has fresh kegs about every 10 to 16 days or so. but due to local demand the tap rotation is actually quite low. It think 15 engine rotates more taps.
kickbacks used to, but not atm.

Baby steps, Otis, baby steps. Honestly, if I'm someplace that doesn't promote itself as a beer bar, I'm happy to see SNPA on the menu and I'm happy to drink it. That said, there are plenty of places that cater to craft beer lovers, many of which have decent-to-good food, as well. Frankly, I drink enough beer at home from a selection that I'm able to curate, maintain and serve to my own specifications, I really don't mind not having a great craft beer option available to me in every restaurant I go to. Like I said, offer me an SNPA or even a Boston Lager and I'll be happy (beats the hell out of what I had to choose from five years ago). I can always have something I really appreciate as a nightcap when I get home.

It's not that I'm impatient, it's the total lack of imagination that bothers me. When it seems like every place, other than beer bars, has the same selection of beer as the place across town, it sucks, plain and simple. The same goes for food. Just like every place had fried zucchini, every place now has fried calamari. And it isn't just the chains. Unless I'm in Manhattan or another large metropolitan area, there's not alot of diversity in beer or food out there.

If you want to see timely keg turnover and you want to see more unusual suspects on tap, you're probably wanting two mutually incompatible things.

I have found that locally owned restaurants, with roots in the community, that offer craft beer, are much less likely to have "the usual suspects." They are show a greater willingness to make different brews available.
