If anyone happens to be going to (or still deciding) on attending the Lupulin Effect IPA Festival at Smartmouth in Va Beach tomorrow, Veil will be pouring RIP Me. With them taking that down for the fest I would not be surprised to see other stuff being delivered to places in the area for tapping this weekend or in the near future.

I opened a bourbon from this year last weekend. It wasn't quite like I remember it being on draft, the taste was a little less bourbon and more chocolate and something else that I couldn't put my finger on. Its a very good beer though, I enjoyed it. Is there anything specific you're wondering about?

Nothing in particular, was just looking for any recent opinions on them as I was gonna pop the AB and BA (having not tried them before) in the coming weekend or two. Thanks!

I opened another bottle of the Apple Brandy last week, it’s drinking great. I wouldn’t sit on those bottles much longer, especially if you haven’t had them fresh but that’s my opinion for all beer.

Good to hear. And yeah I hadn't been sitting on them out of a desire to cellar them; I just hadn't had a chance to try them. Figured I would stick them in the fridge and make it a priority when I noticed that they contained lactose, yesterday.

That is a lot of cash for a 3hr festival. I mean you do get roughly 90oz or 5 1/2 pints in total at minimum, which seems fair given the brewery list, but who the hell wants to drink that much in 3hrs? Spread the 600 tickets over two sessions lasting 4-5hrs each.

Pretty much the same format, similar cost, number of breweries/pours as the past 2 years. 2016 was only two sessions (I think) but still 3 hours for $100+fees and included food vouchers. 250 people each session.

Last year they split it up to three 3-hours sessions of 200 people per with cost of $90 but no included food.

It's pretty much going to be a sprint once again for those wanting to realize full value of their tickets and get pours of everything. Blitzing the first hour and doing 10-11 pours is the easy part but when the last 2/3 hit that's when people are going to start hitting walls. One basically has to maintain a new pour every 4-5 minutes. You almost have to choose whether you want a relax festival enjoying the experience or focusing on trying everything available. I didn't attend last year or even in 2016 but a lot of people did say it was a good time and they were able to try them all.

with 3 oz pours you almost don't even have the option to just relax and enjoy. The very small samples of a large number of beers also creates an environment where people are first and foremost focused on analyzing their beer instead of enjoying the people around them. I know that's the default mode for a lot of people anyway, but that's not my kind of festival. I was pretty disappointed to see the format, I'll be skipping this one.

I don’t mind the price especially when 100% of the proceeds are going to a charity.

Regarding the format for those who have attended, is there a better session to attend? I’m assuming breweries will bring enough beer for all sessions.

Really personal preference about when you want to drink more than anything. In they past they've strictly monitored the amount of each beer poured so that each beer lasted the whole day - no one in session 3 missed anything from session 1.

I think I heard about one issue with one beer from session one last year doing overpours and so I think one ran out. That was a mistake if so and not the norm.

I loved the 1st year set up that was smaller but included a couple food tickets. Probably my biggest issue overall is that is a lot of sours/funk to power through in a very short period. 30+ pours of the same style of beer in 3 hours is a lot no matter the style, but IPAs are easier to knock out than sours for me. I'd like to know more about who is pouring what. I get that in the past they wouldn't know what DIPAs folks would bring until a couple weeks before but if it's funky/wild I'd think they would have a much better lead time. It would be nice to know if there would be some other styles to break it up. The variety of taps at the anniversary party was stellar. If FS had kind of mix I'd be all about it.

They should have more than one food option though (like maybe some tacos or bbq in addition to just having lobster rolls) - that was one of my very few gripes from the anniversary party.

I'm guessing the reason they are only having 1 food vendor is due to the fee charged by the venue. according to the terms and condition on the venue's website, unless it's on the approved list of caterers, which I'm guessing just about all food trucks are not, The Foundation (VA War Memorial) charges a $250 fee per unapproved caterer. Good news is they are allowing attendees to bring in outside food once again for "dietary restrictions." If anyone is not into the lobster truck just come down with a seafood / shellfish allergy and bring in whatever you prefer.
