Veil Brewing eyes would-be food co-op site on Southside
With plans for a satellite taproom on Forest Hill Avenue already in the works, a fast-growing Scott’s Addition-based brewery looks to be planning another facility in South Richmond.

The Veil Brewing Co. this week filed an application for an ABC license to operate at 1200 Westover Hills Blvd., the site of a Family Dollar store that had been set to be converted into the new home of the now-defunct Richmond Food Co-op.

The nearly 17,000-square-foot building is around the corner from Veil’s new taproom that’s being planned at a forthcoming development at 4910-30 Forest Hill Ave.

It is unclear what The Veil is planning at the Westover Hills building. The ABC license shows it asking for permission to operate a brewery producing 500 barrels or less annually. Comparatively, The Veil’s active ABC license for its main brewery at 1301 Roseneath Road in Scott’s Addition is for between 501 and 10,000 barrels annually.

Numerous attempts to reach The Veil owners Dave Michelow, Dustin Durrance and Matt Tarpey were unsuccessful.

The Westover Hills property was purchased last year by developers Charles Bice and Birck Turnbull for $1.4 million. Bice and Turnbull are Veil’s landlords at the Forest Hill development, as well as at Veil’s original home in Scott’s Addition.

    Calls to Bice went unreturned.

The Veil, which first opened in Scott’s Addition in spring 2016, also is planning to open a taproom in Norfolk in a building it is redeveloping with local firm The Monument Cos.

    Rumor time:

I heard that the plan was to turn the existing location into a purely production facility and the new location would be a taproom.

Could the license they applied for possibly be for a brewpub with a 5 barrel system or something?

That was sort of my thoughts when I first saw the story. Maybe one of the Southside locations would be the taproom / smaller brew system and the other would either be a larger production only facility or even like they have in Scott's addition with a separate location for their wilds ales / fermentation or even a barrel aging house.

Wonder if that will be a shitshow. Will probably swing by later in the afternoon if anything is left after the initial line.

Even though it’s announced 11 - 8 I would not be surprised in the least if cans sold out within a few hours we’ll before the scheduled end time. Maybe a couple....

Has anyone tried the DB Maple Syrup? If so, how is it? Is it worth buying? Thanks.

Ocelot / Veil collab can release next Friday, March 8th, for anyone in Northern Va.

Last year we collaborated with our buddies from The Veil Brewing on a monster DIPA called Big Cat. Loaded with Nelson, Citra and Galaxy hops it turned out to be one of our favorites of the year!

Naturally we had to go even bigger this year and brought the gang back out to brew, Bigger Cat! An 11% Triple IPA with even more Nelson, Citra and Galaxy hops.

This beer will be dropping in cans and on tap at the brewery on March 8th at 1pm!
