I agree, this would be a great spring/summer beer.

The only white IPAs I have had that I really liked were Anchorage's very adventurous take on the style:

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24903/77230

and my homebrew version, which is basically a witbier with lots of citra and a secret botanical ingredient for aroma only that is NOT a controlled substance...

Deschutes Chainbreaker is okay and pretty widely available. I didn't much care for the Boston Beer Co. Whitewater.

Too bad that would have been a great idea!

Bitter Neighbor is really good. Others that I can easily find even in my small town liquor store are Lake Superior's Deep Water, Stone Sublimely self righteous and my favorite of the style but not as easy to find, Odell's Mountain Standard. The only White IPA I've tried is Deschutes Chainbreaker and that was pretty good.

In my opinion a White IPA is just a hoppy Witbier. eww (and I like a good Wit).
I'd take a hoppy porter (black IPA) over that style any day of the week.

I thought SA Whitewater was crap (and really do like SA, probly a lot more than most on here).

But Red IPA's are where its at in my opinion.

    Apparently, it is: http://beeradvocate.com/search?start=0&q=white IPA&qt=beer
I don't have the time or patience to check every entry on that list but I'm willing to bet every single one is categorized as a Belgian IPA. Still, I do agree that there should be a differentiation as I find White IPAs to be sweeter with more wheat and bubble gum flavor while Belgian IPAs are more funky, have more of a citrusy hop flavor and are more carbonated.

The only "White IPA" I've thoroughly enjoyed is Blue Point's White IPA. Others I've had that were decent but not mind-blowing are Heavy Seas Riptide, Deschutes Chainbreaker, and Boulevard Reboot. I'll report back when I drink my bottle of Sweetwater Whiplash that's in my fridge. Also, while I did like NB Accumulation, I didn't get much wheat or Belgian yeast from it and it's classified on BA as just an American IPA which I would agree with.
My favorite Belgian IPAs are Green Flash Le Freak, Stone Cali-Belgique, Stillwater Why Can't IBU, Lagunitas A Little Sumpin' Wild, Heavy Seas Dubbel Cannon, Clown Shoes Tramp Stamp, Poperings Hommel Bier (The only one on my list that's actually from Belgium), Terrapin Dr. Krunkles, and Flying Dog Wildeman Farmhouse IPA. Others that were just OK were Parish Farmhouse IPA and Clown Shoes Muffin Top

Another vote here for SweetWater Whiplash IPA "What happens when a 500 year old Belgian style ale gets rear-ended by a truckload of pompous American hops? It equals one heck of an ambulance chaser of a beer"

Drinking Whiplash as I type this. Missing a lot of the "white" character. Not much wheat flavor, no Belgian yeast. Just drinks like a regular IPA. That being said, I like it all right.

I prefer the "white IPAs" that drink like a "regular IPA"; though sometimes I crave the belgian yeast flavors in a hop-bomb.
I'll also add, that I think they drink even easier than a "regular IPA". The light, fruity "regulars" like Jai Alai, Two Hearted, etc. come close, but the whites are still easier-drinking by a margin IMO. Almost too easy drinking (as if :stuck_out_tongue:). I don't crave them very often, but they are incredibly refreshing to me.

New Belgium's Accumulation is the my favorite of these "white IPAs", the super bright mosaic flavors shine over the almost non-existent malt flavors.

Don't tell New Belgium its not the season. They are alright. Some better than others. Give em a try.

Unless their agenda is too make it so easy-drinking we quickly have two, vs. sipping a Winter Warmer? If it is, it's working for me :grinning:
