Accumulation is tasty! Had a couple this weekend, definitely one to keep around in the fridge when I want hops with a softer wheat tinge.

Where there is a thread about White IPAs, there will be confusion about White IPAs. I guess that's to be expected for something that isn't it's own style, but has distinct characteristics.

I tend to think of them as a subset of Belgian IPAs, because they are essentially a hoppy (IPA) wit (Belgian). Belgian IPAs that *don't* fall into that subset, by contrast, are more like a hoppy tripel (also Belgian).

But they--to me--are more than just IPAs with a lot of wheat in the grain bill. You need the coriander/orange peel spiciness that you expect from a wit to make it a true "White IPA". All the examples I've had and enjoyed have been mentioned here already, but my favorites have been Boulevard Reboot and Deschutes Chainbreaker. New Belgium Accumulation is also nice, but the spice characteristic isn't very aggressive

Drank them from Saranac, Harpoon, Heavy Seas, all pretty decent.

My favorite White IPA is Deschutes Chainbreaker.

Jesse, you might be interesting in knowing that Chainbreaker is brewed with a Trappist style yeast (e.g., Wyeast 3787). So, if you ‘define’ a beer by the yeast strain used then Chainbreaker is a Belgian IPA (despite the presence of wheat, coriander, and orange peel).

    Cheers!

I've had Chainbreaker and Accumulation, and both were good (think I liked the Deschutes better), so another vote for those two. Have you been sold on those yet?

Yeah, that response was shooting from the hip of ignorance. I figured someone would school me soon enough. Thanks.

No need to break the bank. Sam Adams and Saranac make 2 of the best.

Are you talking about Whitewater ? That tasted like a regular IPA to me and the "white" part seemed minimal.

I love that Chainbreaker. I'd definitely like to try others in this style too.

The Anchorage version is galaxy hopped w/Brett in it. Not so sure that should be held as the benchmark for the style.

I really enjoyed New Belgium - Accumulation especially since I'm not usually blown away by NB offerings.
Deschutes - Chain Breaker is also pretty decent IMO

Last night on the other hand, I tried Boulevards - Reboot White IPA, Definitely NOT A FAN !

I get what you are going for, but if it isn't using a belgian yeast I don't think it should be a belgian style.

Well, I'm not sure what your objection to a specific hop variety might be, but I'll grant that Brett does make it different. Odd that you didn't mention the kumquats.

But I stand by what I wrote. All of those things do make a difference, and to me, it's the difference between a relatively uninteresting style and an outstanding variation on it.

Must've had bad luck with Chainbreaker, neither bottle or draft did much for me...
