It's definitely not seasonal in Munich.

Yes, best not to make assumptions.

But if you specified your intent of Munich Dunkle, would we have 6 pages of discussion?

    Cheers!

I enjoyed this Hofbrau Dunkel Weizen earlier this week. At least that's the name of the beer on Hofbrua's import site. It looks like the name for this beer in Germany is Hofbräu Schwarze Weisse. The main BA listing calls it Hefe Weisse Dunkel (BA also has a Schwarze Weisse listing.) The Bierhall where I drank it called it Hofbrau Hefe-Dunkel. Take your pick I guess.

@steveh , I am extremely happy to include this beer in the thread just for you. Just kidding of course... but actually, I did think you'd appreciate it anyway. At the least, I thought you (and the OP plus @BruChef @AlcahueteJ ) would find it interesting that it looks like (although I could be wrong) they brand it with "Schwarze" rather than Dunkel for Germany.

I thought I'd revisit the Warsteiner due to the thread. Sinamar kidding aside, It's much roastier than their Pils. I was tempted to tell you to revisit a single just for the sake of fun and revisiting a more northerly take on Dunkel, but I don't think you'll really enjoy it based on your other post about it being thin and dry. Cheers man. :beers:

I received an e-mail earlier today from a local beer retailer where he listed:

    “16oz 4pk Cans

    Neshaminy Creek

    Punkless Dunkel”

I was not aware of this beer so I looked it up on BA and it has a score of 90 – Outstanding

“Notes: You may know this beer by it’s previous name, Punkel Dunkel Pumpkin Wheat Ale. It’s also been called a lot of other names as well: Pumpkin Dunkel, Pumpkinweizen, etc. Whatever you’ve called it in the past, we know that regardless of what it’s called, this is one of the most popular, if not the most popular seasonal beer we make. When we set out to create what we hoped was a unique pumpkin beer we decided to brew an imperial version of our Dunks Ferry Dunkelweizen, but in an unabashedly American way by adding pumpkin to the mash and your favorite pumpkin pie spices to the kettle. We add dark brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice to the boil as well to pair with the banana esters and spicy clove imparted by the yeast during fermentation. At 8.8% ABV it’s no slouch either. Always released after Labor Day, Punkless Dunkel doesn’t last long as the crisp Autumn nights make way to Winter just around the corner. Do the seasons even change in Texas.”

    An intriguing reading beer.

    Cheers!

I recall you saying you love crushing the Pilsner at Zwei, but I’m curious if you’ve tried their dunkel and what you think of it.

Glad the style isn’t as uncommon in our area… even happier with the quality of them !

It's all just good fun. I was just going with the joke rather than really including it as an example for the OP. But honestly, such beers should be at home in this thread at this point.

Unfortunately haven't had the pleasure. Zwei might as well be on the other side of the world from me...or around 90 minutes away. I've only had a few beers from them. Just the pils, weiss, and Vienna. All were fantastic and could be the best versions of those styles in the state. One of these days I just need to dedicate a full day to hanging out at Zwei, but that's tough considering all the other breweries up in FC.

Not sure if you are talking about Munich Dunkel or Dunkel Weizen or both. I can get Weihenstephaner Dunkel Weizen year round but most others including Munich Dunkels are spotty. Love both though!

Just had a Roaring Table Helles* while grilling dinner. I feel very lucky that there's a nice lager renaissance going on around here.

*I've come to the conclusion that the mellow Tetnang hops make this beer.

Read through the thread, we've established he was really asking about Munich Dunkel... despite the discussion drift and so much style misunderstanding.:wink:

Munich Dunkel, especially local breweries that make it. I do see Hofbrau & Ayinger a good bit most of the year. Yes, I see the Weihenstephaner Dunkel Weizen a lot too.

Sorry for me being an idiot here.
We have just moved to Vienna, Austria from Japan and have been having an epiphany here ever since - about how fricken AMAZING German Helles is!
Been under its spell to an extent to even go off topic in a thread about Dunkels to wave the flag for Helles… apologies:sweat_smile:

No apologies needed because I was agreeing with you, not complaining. I'm a Helles lover too, and I'm fortunate to have a German-inspired brewery here in town so I can enjoy German beers. They're out of their Helles now so I'm having to drink their Maibock, which I look at as an imperial Helles. (I prefer it anyway for the extra flavor.)
