I voted for "talk to the mgr" if it was a quick thing and not holding you up. Overall not worth the hassle, but I understand your kindness to other customers so they don't have to go through same situation as you did. As long as you choose the place for food first and beers as secondary, I'd keep going back if you like the food and its convenient. Not worth boycotting.

I don't drink beer I don't like, just to have a beer. I prefer a diet coke to crap beer. Yes Dead Robin still exists, great fries.

Not sure where you were, but that sort of crap just happens. When the cute, brainless waitress says we have Coors light, Bud, and Miller, I'll ask if they have a Sams Adams. Sometimes they'll say, "I think we got that".
Iif I see Sam Adams lager, or SNPA on a menu/board, I'm OK with that.
    Happy New Year everyone!

Back when I joined BA there was a trend of “I went to Applebees/TGI/Olive Garden and was shocked by the frozen glasses/below optimal serving temperature/incorrect glassware/servers inability to articulate what the Sam Adams seasonal was”.

With all respect to OP this is a little like that. Keep your expectations in check.

sometimes you gotta just suck it up and order a boston lager or blue moon. or we could kick off a new trend of sneaking whales into chili's

If you go to a chain restaurant expecting gourmet food and 35 craft beers on tap, and a wait staff prepared to recommend fine beers (or wines), that is on you.

Chain restaurants serve their purpose: a sit down table, no ordering at the counter, relatively cheap food a step up from burgers and fries, and usually at least one craft beer on tap. Depending on the chain, sports on the TV.

Not every meal out is for fine dining or 16 IPAs to choose from.

Me too. Sort of like to think this is an obvious choice that most people would make.

I've been drinking craft beer for a long time now, since at least the mid 80s. Back in the day, I can't tell you the number of times I'd have to listen to some waiter/waitress proudly run through their vast selection of swill on tap or bottle, before politely nodding and ordering a diet coke (or sprite). And yes, I became very accustomed to getting the "look." ("Well, if you didn't want a beer, why did you have me run through our entire selection".)

Happily, that hardly ever happens now... Almost every place where I live now will have something on tap I know I'll enjoy. To be perfectly honest, the only time I have the sort of reaction the OP had in this thread, is if I go to a place looking for a particular beer or beers they're featuring, and they've run out (and haven't updated their taplist). A place like Applebees or BBW's... I just don't go there, or if I do, I go there expecting a lousy beer experience (and so am overjoyed if I have anything less than that).

It's really pretty rare these days when I go to a restaurant and can't find anything on offer that I can tolerate.

I see this as people that are uptight vs those that are not. Those that go to a chain restaurant and can't find something to drink must only drink whales from the "cellar" or something to tick. When faced with limited choices and you can't enjoy a Guinness, sam adams, Hofbrau, sierra Nevada, etc. you might need to loosen up this drinking habit of yours. Now I'm not saying you have to drink common beer but don't be an ass about it to the server.

In these cases i will ask if they want to go to a McMenamins or even The Ram. McMenamins have stronger and better mixed drinks..and Scotch which I am getting intoin my old age! But i can always find some drinkable beer at McMs.
I guess another reason we are fortunate up in the PNW

I guess I've never been good at being "most people." I'd take a Budweiser, Boston Lager, Goose Island fill in the blank, Lagunitas, Shock Top, or ANY BEER over a diet Coke without hesitation... and I have no idea how the opposite could be even remotely obvious.

Water I can get on board with. But I think zid’s point is (at least mine is) that thumbing your nose at macro / low brow craft beer, but then ordering a soda - doesn’t make sense

I used to drink any-old-beer when in college, but not since I got into craft. I've tried all of the styles and there are few I won't drink but AAL's and IPA's are at the bottom of the list for me. Unfortunately they comprise the draft list of most restaurant chains because apparently beer=Macro AAL and craft=IPA. I usually limit myself to one beer a day and would prefer a favorite cellar beer at home to a crap beer at a restaurant.

I think if a place is going to be beer centric enough to offer flights of beers and list their beers on a chalkboard, they should make a priority of keeping that chalkboard updated as each keg empties and is changed.

Also, is said restaurant a chain brewpub? I don’t think I’ve been to a chain restaurant that offers flights or even really focuses on beer at all.

@bbtkd , that's all fine and good. Drink whatever beer/soda/beverage you want... and it's fine to want a diet Coke over a PBR. I'm just having fun with the idea that everyone else should have exactly the same preferences (which isn't what you were stating).

If and when I go out for food I expect a good meal, good service and some good beers. This is part of the reason I do not go to any chain food places. The only time I do is if traveling and that’s all I can find around the motel. I also understand what I’m getting into and try to just order a basic chicken sandwich and fries and I might have a beer if I have not spied any spot to get a few beers to bring back to the room. I don’t need a beer with my meal, water works great. I do need a few beers after being in a car all day though.

Just roll with it, understand where you are and set your expectations to that.

    Enjoy
