Those sauteed pig balls (Huitre de Montagne) with chanterelles at Chez Beverly ruined you forever. No one likes caviar after pig balls!

It's not that complex, He just doesn't like the way they taste. There is no way a Bud Light drinker would like any of those beers.

Some people can't or don't see the need to get past the generic 'beer-taste' or 'wine-taste'. I was more avid wine drinker few years back and "It tastes like wine" was mainly what I got from my family whether it was $10 Spanish red or Bordeux Growth wine. Difference between wines are more nuanced than differences in beer but if you're not looking for those differences, I don't think it's not obvious to pick out when you're not expecting such things

It took me a very long time to even be brave enough to review my first beer on Beer Advocate. But once I started trying to dissect the intricate details of beer flavors, it became easier. I still don't think I'm that great at it, but my point is someone new to craft beer who isn't even thinking about malts, hops, and even what style the beer is will probably make blanket observations about the beers all tasting the same.

It could be that simple, but we don't know that. OP never said her guy thought they taste bad, just that he couldn't differentiate between them. This is a common reaction when people are first exposed to craft beer. Some can acquire a taste with more knowledge and experience, while some are unable to. I think more research is needed in this case before he is dismissed as a lost cause after one mixed six.

I think anyone can get into it once you realize how easy it is to hide a borderline drinking problem by becoming a connoisseur. Lol that's how i do it.

Every time i buy beer now i get asked, "you having a party?" And in my head im thinking how its going to only last me three days haha.

    Get into craft-Disguise alcoholism lol

    Based on your post:

    1) Sounds like he doesn't know craft beer as well as you do.
    2) He had help putting that selection together so not blind.
    3) Relationships aren't based on beer and he obviously cares about you.

That's an odd reaction. Most craft beer noobies I share beer with can at least tell that they're different, even if they can't describe how. They'll say, "This tastes dark" or "This tastes bitter", which is the beginning of a developing a palate. If you can perceive any difference in taste between beers, then you can expound on those differences until you have a well developed palate. As for the folks that just say "This just tastes like beer", well, I don't know what to say to that. I can understand if they can't tell light beers apart, but if you can't tell that a witbier is different at all from a stout, you may be beyond help.

I just got into craft last year at the age of 57. Over the preceding years I had discovered that I liked "some dark beers", and thinking there were two styles, dark beer and not-dark beer. Could not figure out how I could like some/most dark beers while others tasted completely different and terrible. Once I got into craft, I realized I liked stouts - and noted the wide variation within the style. After my first BBS I swore them off - now they are my favorite stout mutation.

If the OPs boyfriend is really interested in craft, he can have fun with it. He is lucky to have an experienced guide at hand and these forums to assist his journey. First thing is to do is determine his favorite styles and find a couple of favorite beers - so he can shake his macro beginnings! Might be good to start with lagers and hefeweizens.

I'll bring different beers to band practice with me and let the guys try them...no matter what it is, unless it's a stout, the guitarist always says 'man, just tastes like grapefruit to me', shakes his head and sips on his Miller Lite. I've never once understood the joke.

Maybe that's one way he's heard IPA tasted being described as and stuck with it.

My father always said, "They all taste the same." Of course, if you only have one beer a year, you probably wouldn't be able to compare it with the previous one.

Next to him, I'm a heavy drinker with my one a week.

Different strokes. Honestly I've had my friends try some great beers and it goes back to Miller Lite/Bud Light for them. I enjoy the hunt forn the next great beer, they just like what they like.

Yeah - some of us think we're "fixing macro drinkers" by trying to show them the error of their ways and converting them. They on the other hand may well believe we have the problem, hung up on funny tasting, funny named, harder to find, expensive beers. They can get hammered on beer they can buy anywhere, at less than half the price of craft.
