Went to visit my brother and had a great Saturday. First went to Buzz and Neds(was on Throwdown with Bobby Flay) for some awesome barbecue and some suprisingly good beer options. Next went to Hardywood Park brewery for some samples, growler fills and bottle purchases. Great new brewery and the people there made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in the door. Then we attended a Flying Squirrels minor league baseball game. $11 for an Diamond club seat and $10 for a 32oz Legend Brown Ale and the Squirrels won 1-0. Finally we finished at BlowToad. A newer bar/resturant with great pizza and about 30 really good taps. Just don't order the swinging steak pizza without asking what it is first. Took a cab home and happily passed out on the couch. I would recommend this trip to anyone who likes beer, food and sports.

the Buzz-n-Neds throwdown was for their ribs, not their Q.
there are better Q options in town (try Alamo and Ronnies).

a few things going on the next 2 weekends:
fri 4/20 - Sierra Nevada tap takeover at Cap Ale Downtown with 24 SN brews going.
sat 4/21 - VA Cask event at Cap Ale Downtown. 12-4 and 6-10 sessions with about 12 casks going.
sat 4/28 - Hardywood Parks Spring Frolics event which is the launch party for their Barrel Series.

Alamo is near my brothers place he did mention they had good barbecue. I'll check it out next time. I also wanted to come back for the Hardywood event but I think it's the same weekend as NASCAR. Not going to mess with 95 that weekend.

Don't forget ****fest 3 on 4/21. Way better beers than you will find anywhere else in the city.

Even though it has nothing to do with beer, Alamo is awesome. Tops in the city if you ask me.

I'm glad to hear you liked Hardywood. I've been interested in getting there (I have family in Richmond) since I saw their website linked through the BA site. Are there any specific brews from them you tried and liked?

Everything I have tried from them has been quality. The Hoplar(Seasonal Imperial IPA) was the best thing I had this weekend. It was just released. They currently only have one year round and two seasonals available. The next realease on 4/28 is going to be a barrel aged quad. I hope they bottle some so I can get my brother to put a couple aside. One thing to know is they currently can't sell full pints at the brewery only free samples. This will change in July when a new law takes affect. Still worth checking out and good for picking up some growlers and bottles. But if I was able to purchase full beers I would of stayed longer.

the bourbon barrel quad is going to the first bottle from Hardywood that is going to be officially limited in sales: 3 per person.
yep, on Jul1 they'll be able to sell pints and are going to get with some of the local food carts to set up shop in the parking lot a couple days of the week as HP has no interest in selling food.

I'm trying to see if I can squeeze in an hour or so of ****fest between the MS Walk earlier that day and working the 5-10 shift at the Cask Event...

It starts at 2pm, so you should have time. I will be manning the grill and smoker while chugging beers. Well, probably not chugging, but you get the point.

In terms of other places, good if small Belgian and local selection at Brasserie Can-Can (or Can-Can Brasserie, I forget which) in Carytown. On a recent day-trip I had a Hardywood Singel, which I also bought a 22 of along w/ a 22 of Hoplar, later that afternoon at the brewery, before heading back to Fauquier County w/ my dad...good beers.

Born in Stuart Circle Hospital (now upscale apartments with the name One Monument Avenue), he grew up (poor) in the Fan in the 20s and 30s, thinks but isn't positive that Can-Can was maybe a grocery then...he would ride the streetcar up Grove to CCV to shag balls on the range and pull whatever occasional loop the caddie master would give him.

Headed down to Richmond this afternoon. Hopeful that I can make Hardywood Park before close at 5pm. If not, any recommendations for bottles shops on the NW side (out towards Henrico) that carry their stuff? I'm guessing the only bottles available right now are Hoplar and Singel?

Tried an ISO for the Gingerbread Stout with no responses, so wondering how hard it will be to find their stuff in stores.

Just a quick question to some local Richmonders...is it worth me calling around the area and seeing if there is a random bottle of Gingerbread Stout hanging around in a less frequented shop? Just hit up TW and they still had plenty of Mocha...was there as much of the Gingerbread?

Just want to know if I should give up or not.

No, it unfortunetly is not worth it. Gone gone gone. I'd be more than happy to trade any of their upcoming/future releases for things we cannot get here. The Quad is quite delicious.
