I already do this. Nothing like the smell of fresh Pliny...labels.

Rogue and Grand Teton basically already do this as do some other beer labels. I don't see why it is a problem with mandating it since companies are already doing it and it helps inform the consumer???

I don't know what their logic is, but for whatever reason, they just won't let brewers put the nutritional info on there. I don't see what it could hurt. Maybe they think people would have the attitude of "hey look, it's sorta healthy!" and drink more? One of my local breweries sends out samples to a lab a few times year. Recently one of the brewers told me that their Imperial Stout was was just under 400 calories a pint. I'd like to know that info. I'd still probably have the next beer, but I'd probably get something lighter after one of those.

If I'm going to pay a premium for craft beer I expect cool/interesting artwork.
I mean cool stuff like a bull shark firing an uzi. Not this Hop Stoopid outhouse or Elysian Men's Room or Weyerbacher creepy monk nonsense.

Five things I wish were always included on beer labels:
    1. Style
    2. ``bottled on'' date
    3. ABV
    4. hop varietals used
    5. Eliza Dushku's phone number

A sticker that says "free" would be nice.

I still think that is pure BS. It is really annoying trying to figure out how many calories in each beer. All you can really do is guesstimate based on ABV. But residual sugars can sway that number hugely. I never really know what I'm drinking, very frustrating.

It's not the FDA that prohibits it (in fact, those "gluten-free" beers that don't qualify as beer under TTB rules HAVE to follow the FDA's mandatory nutritional labeling requirements), it's the TTB. And the reason has been it was considered to be a "Health Claim" which are prohibited for malt beverages and other alcoholic beverages.

Subpart C—Labeling Requirements for Malt Beverages
    § 7.29 Prohibited practices.

    (e) Health-related statements —(1) Definitions. When used in this paragraph (e), terms are defined as follows:
    (i) Health-related statement means any statement related to health (other than the warning statement required by §16.21 of this chapter) and includes statements of a curative or therapeutic nature that, expressly or by implication, suggest a relationship between the consumption of alcohol, malt beverages, or any substance found within the malt beverage, and health benefits or effects on health.

But, that rule has slowly been chipped away (starting when "light beers" came along and brewers wanted to advertise them as having less calories, etc.) There are currently proposals for either voluntary or mandatory "Serving Facts" labeling on beer and (as TheFlern noted, too) there are a number of beers that aren't light beers which have passed TTB COLA that are now listing calories and other nutritional info. I noticed on the new STRAUB labels-

AVERAGE ANALYSIS PER 12 FL. OZ. CALORIES 132. CARBOHYDRATES 10.5 GRAMS.
PROTEIN 1.3 GRAMS. FAT 0.0 GRAMS. ALL NATURAL. NO PRESERVATIVES.

For an IPA, this would be awesome. In an English barleywine or a stout or something along those lines, hop profile doesn't really matter too much to me. A brief description would be cool as opposed to hop profile. So basically, for an IPA it'd be a hop profile, and for a stout it'd be coffee, chocolate, etc. (whatever is dominant). Also, could throw in IBUs and potentially calories (but not that important).

Also, I'm surprised alcohol isn't mandatory at this point. The government loves to control everything, and alcohol is obviously one of those things. Currently, I'd be enjoying a Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Barleywine while watching the NHL playoffs without knowing how much alcohol is even in it if it wasn't for BA. I mean at 12.5%, it's sort of important to know. On a side note, 2 goals in like 30 seconds for Boston, holy shat.

With self-destruct mode. That'll solve the problem of "old" IPAs forever.

I typically wish my hand was on a beer label.

In all seriousness though, just something that gives me an idea of exactly what it is that I'm buying. There are breweries out there that come out with beers with odd names like "Stalin's Revenge" or "Ape Insurance Salesman" or "Clodagh Rogers", and while I'm all for nonsense, I'm a lot less likely to buy something if I don't know what's in the bottle.

Put pictures of satan-worshipping frogs dancing naked in a circle around a sacrificial duck for all I care, just put "IPA" or "Pilsner" or "Lambic" on the damn bottle so I know if it's a style I'm into. Or go nuts and gimme a few short sentences about what you think said beer tastes like. You can even include your frog demon thing and I won't care.

On a similar note, a seasonal beer label that just says "Brewery X: Season Y", and nothing else, is not very helpful.

Wish every bottle came with either a expiration date or bottled-on date, hop profile and serveware suggestion.
