    Bell's is overrated?

    That doesn't even make sense.

It is like somebody, that doesn't like seafood, saying that Lobster is overrated.

    Overrated is a pejorative term.

Who is to say that a brewery is rated too highly? If you are going to honestly make that claim you are saying you know better than everyone else at the same time.

It is just better to use another term, you are always going to stir something up when you start throwing around the word overrated.

I personally think both Founders and Bells are overrated but much more so being true of Founders. I think Bells is a very good brewery and they do a wide range of different brews and styles that fit many different tastes and they do most of these very well. I just don't think they really do anything overly exceptional and by that I mean I'm not sure I would refer to any of their beers as being in the top 3 of a style that I would refer to someone as a beer that came to mind. 2H maybe makes that list and possibly black note but that is about it. Not trying to slam Bells at all, I just have never understood how many people hold them as one of their top 3-5 best breweries. They do everything consistently well but nothing overly amazing and there is certainly a place for that, just not in my top 10-20.

Founders on the other hand is WAY overrated. Bells blows their regular offerings out of the water and I don't have a single beer by Founders that I would consider to be exceptional. Their "top notch offering", let's say KBS for the sake of this, is not even in the top 5 of that style of beer. It is actually rather average when compared to all of the other more amazing and easier to land versions of that style. Sure maybe they made CBS at one point and all of a very few people got to try it but come on, you don't get long term cred for making one brew one time. Plus their distribution sucks.

I like a lot of Founders and Bells beer offerings. There are beers from each brewer that I don't care for. I'm not going to say Founders is over rated because Bolt Cutter or FMB are considered by some to be disappointing.

3FFF Pride and Joy is a beer I tried once and wouldn't ever buy again, is 3FFF over rated ?

Not really, any beer that you review and rate lower than it's average you think is overated. So if I rate a beer an 80 and it gets a 92 on here, am I saying I think I know more than everyone else at the same time? No, I am saying I don't like the beer as much as everyone else, which by defenition, means I think everyone else has overrated it. There really isn't a better term to use.

I've been drinking Oberon since it was called Solsun. It's a nice summer beer, but since then my palate has moved on to other things. Doesn't thrill me. But after knowing it for 15 - 16 years. That's just how it is. Bells has done things with beer that the American drinker now thinks of as common, and your name sake wouldn't exist if something like Two Hearted didn't lead the way. Try it as a real ale sometime if it's ever served that way.
My only beef with them is that Larry is a massive Cubs fan. Over-rated? Pfft. Every brewery has fanboys so every one of them is over-rated. Get in where you fit in and plug that hole with a beer.

Just to be clear I originally said all "craft beer is overrated and we are the perpetrators." too which Flashy replied "Craft beers are pretty awesome in my book". So the post you quoted was in line with those.

I don't see overrated as a pejorative term.
    o·ver·rate ([IMG][IMG]v[IMG]r-r[IMG]t[IMG])
    tr.v. o·ver·rat·ed, o·ver·rat·ing, o·ver·rates
To overestimate the merits of; rate too highly.

I feel it reflects more poorly on the people doing the rating than it does anyone else, hence my first comment about how we are the perpetrators.

Etiquette I guess? We are all craft lovers as we're all on this site, right? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, this just seemed like stepping on toes for the sake of stepping on toes. **** and hate in the same post when referring to beer? Strong words man, chill out. Thanks for the afro love.

Well, yes, when taken out of context they are strong words. Read what I wrote again. I wasn't attacking you personally nor do I hate anyone. I just can't stand when people attack others for their opinion. Agree with it or not, we should still respect the fact that this is that person's opinion. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Thread would be taken more seriously if OP wouldn't have ruined his credibility immediately by calling Founders Centennial better than Two-Hearted, which is not only far better, but one of the best IPA's in existence. After reading that I disregarded everything said by the Hop_King thereafter.

Eh, why not. I'll jump in and also proclaim my love for Two Hearted to be greater than my love for Centennial. Maybe it's because I had Two Hearted first. Maybe it's because Two Hearted was this magical beer that was hyped up for years before I could finally try it, while Centennial was an "oh, I guess you could try this if you can't find Two Hearted" suggestion. Whatever the reason, I just plain like Two Hearted better.

Now, that said: I'll take FBS over any stout Bell's has made (that I've had a chance to try) any day of the week. I feel like it's kind of an apples to oranges comparison, though.

To each his own, but I don't understand the broad brush approach. Based on your opinion of three of there beers you feel the brewery is ''vastly" overrated? Pretty much all breweries have their hits and misses. I have only had three Bell's brews, Two Hearted was nice, loved Hopslam, and I rate Black Note slightly higher than KBS.

I have had Robert the Bruce, In the Name of Suffering, and Alpha Klaus from FFF and find that brewery to be vastly overrated.

I don't know if they are over rated as a brewery, but I will agree that you have to be very carfeul when purchasing Two Hearted regarding shelf life. I think plenty of their offerings are good and wouldn't mind if they distributed to my area. As an overall brewery I'd prefer most of Founders though as the OP is indicating.
