I've had Nigerian Guinness - probably the best of the bunch. I've also had Guinness brewed in Kenya, which was decent at the time....

When I was in Japan I visited a great Thai Restaurant that introduced me to Phuket beer, and it was perfectly paired with the spicy food. Lo and behold, when I went to Thailand (multiple times) the beer is nowhere to be found.

I have had local beer while in Zimbabwe, Nambia, S.A, and Zambia. They are all basically European style lagers or pilsners and to me were nothing special other than the aspect of at least you could get a beer in a remote area that might not have much to choose from. In the Congo and other African countries they make a home recipe beer in huge kettle and drink it for celebrations and religous occasions. I have never tried that but it might be interesting!

I've tasted and bought Angkor Stout directly from the brewery in Sihanoukville. While not world class, it was drinkable and a nice change from the constant barrage of adjunct lagers in Southeast Asia.

I spent about 5 years altogether in Southeast Asia and agree that was a pretty decent alternative to some of the other terrible choices (local Carlsberg, Chang, etc).

When visiting a friend in Albania I had several of their local beers as well as a few somewhat more obscure ones from the Balkan area. Most were forgettable fizzy Euro lagers, but a couple stood out. Korça Dark was an Albanian dark lager that I found quite drinkable, and I also really enjoyed Laško Dark from Slovenia - nice and roasty.

Not that obscure but had about 150 Pitons on my honeymoon in St. Lucia.

Beerlao Dark is a nice one for what it is. And any Guinness FES is pretty great.

Belikin in Belize. I really enjoyed it on the beach while there. Then again, I enjoyed just about everything while on the beach there! Their stout was just meh. The premium was their best.

I've had tons of Cambodian beer; mostly Angkor, and Anchor.

Was in the navy so sampled a lot of beers in a lot of countries. Without doubt, Stella in Egypt was the worse I and my shipmates ever had. When a sailor can't even finish one, you know it has to be bad. Forget pine or fruit tones, hows formaldahyde sound.

Storm Brewing in Bali (Indonesia) makes a stout that wasn't half bad. Hakim from Ethiopia is another decent stout. Also, there's Haywards 5000 Super Premium Ber from India...

Most of them are pale lagers that got bought up by macros but still on level if not better than who bought them. Lion Stout is a great example that good beer can be made anywhere, its a matter of talent.
