This rule seems excessive...

Does anyone else think that the '20 beer review minimum' requirement for being able to add new beers is a bit excessive?

I went to add The Commons, Bourbon Little Brother, to their list and just discovered I couldn't because I'm required to have reviewed at least 20 beers. I understand the idea is to minimize inaccurate submissions, but 20 reviews common.

80% of the time I spend drinking it's with friends and while we certainly talk about the beer it's not the same thing as sitting down and writing a review. I would never write a review based on memory (it wouldn't be fare to the beer or anyone reading the review). 15% of the time I'm busy doing something else, eating, watching a movie, or just generally too exhausted to write a review. So for the 5% of the time that I can actually devote to writing a review I really give it my full attention.

I think rules like this, while well intended, promote mediocrity.

How much do you think it should be? And why?

No- I hate mis-categorized/double entry beers, esp. when people goof on the styles, ABV etc etc etc.

So I see you only have 8 reviews, which must mean that you're fine with not being able to add a beer if it's not on the site yet?

Maybe the better thing would be to require a picture. That way you know they have all the info right in front of them. Plus it's pretty annoying seeing an entry without a photo so that would be an added plus.

you could power through 16 reviews in a weekend if you wanted to. Boom! access granted.

I'm fine with it. I reviewed those 8 beers in about 2 weeks and decided I didn't really care to do anymore. It wouldn't take too much time to hit 20 reviews imo.

    This would solve all those issues;

What are you going to do about the tap only beers?
    ---
I believe the reason for 20 reviews is to ensure some minimum participation among other things. I see that you review beers. Why don't you review a bit more and then add? What's the rush?

20 is, IMO, just as arbitrary as 10 or 30. You need to draw a line somewhere, right?

This is kinda my point though. I could certainly sit down and half-ass 16 more reviews to meet the requirement...but isn't that actually much worse?

A fine idea, but if the beer is on tap only; not bottled, what picture would you take?

Edit: someone beat me to that point

What if the abv or style isn't on the label? Boom problem un-solved

Most reviews are half-assed. But it gets you following protocol and the structure of how a beer looks in the database.

Fare points. I still think something in the single digits is more reasonable and you wouldn't be compromising quality.

This rule was put in place at the request of the BA community. It's worked just fine for the past decade+, so unless you can present some compelling reasons for change (other than you simply can't be bothered) it's going to stay.

I'd also love to hear your thoughts on how this rule promotes mediocrity.

True, but a quick internet search of the brewery's website and you should be able to find what you need.

No I completely understand why there are rules set. Otherwise things would become a cluster fuck in a hurry. All I'm saying is that even people who have been on here for a really long time haven't hit the 20 review mark. It just seems a little high.

The mediocrity in what people post as reviews to simply meet a requirement so they can do something as simple as add a beer. No disrespect was intended in my comment, by the way. I'm just saying when the bar is set too high, people start cutting corners.

Something I'd trust an established reviewer to do over someone who hasn't any under their belt.

Most of the time. There are quite a few beers that you just can't find the abv for on the www. Next step....contact the brewery and hope they'll give you the info.
